Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

this is with the sigma 50-500 i rented from borrowlenses, taken with my D700.
this is at 500mm, with a pretty high 4000 ISO. (I believe I did a little sharpening as well) It was taken as I was heading to T-hill on the morning of the 25 hour enduro there.

How big/heavy is it cuz I'll be handholding it all weekend

Like BrassPremier mentioned, it definitely has some weight to it. I probably wouldn't play with it again without a monopod.

I used it all through the track event, and I'd have to say the 500mm wasn't really needed. Trying to get a good pan, at that max zoom, was tricky. I still haven't gone through all those pics, but I don't think any were real success. Since I was new to that lens, and even that zoom range, I did spend a fair amount of time at 500, but I think my better snaps were down in the 300-400 range)

It was nice for the range it had, though. Using the 50 range around the pits, and still being able to zoom on any apparent on track happenings, without switching a lens was nice. But if all I was doing was spectating (I was a part of the crew) I think I would have just gone for a nice 300 or 400mm prime, and cropped it down for 'close-ups' , and stuck with my kit zoom (24-120mm) for the rest.

So should I just stick with my 70-300 and crop it a little? I've had good results at full zoom and even wide open...for me atleast :laughing I plan on walking around the track like T2 and T5 where 400-500 would be needed I think.

300 2.8 for $50/ weekend and 1.4X for $10/ weekend.
If i was to shoot some moto i would get that combo if
200-400 is too much...

so... i've lurked and found what I originally came for... borrowlenses dot com
but on a second subject... I'm going to the MotoGP and i've never been there before. any protips or words of advice for the amateur? I'm planning on renting a 17-40mm for my wandering about and whatnot and I have a 55-250mm... ...yeah... and i'm shooting with a Canon Rebel XS... anyways, cheers!

17-40 will be good for a walkaround lens at Laguna Seca. See if you can budget to rent a 70-200 and a 1.4x teleconverter - you'll get a lot more quality that way- if you're looking to get shots of bikes on track. Most of the fencing around the track is around 5' tall, so if your arms aren't comfortably over that height, you might consider bringing a stepladder to comfortably shoot over the fence.

Also, bring lots of water & sunscreen, and carry your gear in a comfortable bag.

Add to that - I'd forget the IS version, the non IS F4 version is relatively light and small, and won't kill battery life either. You're going to be in bright sunlight, so I don't think you'll have much of an issue with shake.

+1 on LOTS of water. I drank 12 pints the last time I went, and didn't need to pee once all day... :wow
