Actually, all it does is cost me a buck.... ebay my friend.
IDK... I had a mediocre 35mm camera back in the day and went through 2 lenses before putting on a filter/protector. Instead of impacting my lens any force impacts that filter... Those were the days I was doing a lot of hiking with my camera though... now not so much.
Would hate to pull out my new 200 dollar lens, and find it cracked.
Um, lens cover? The *only* time I use a filter these days is very high UV days - but really, most lenses and sensors take care of that anyway.
And, using a polarizing filter.
The rest of the time it makes bright, contrasty subjects foggy, and causes vignetting (esp. on that 35 you just bought).
I hardly *ever* need to clean my lenses, except after kids parties. Which is about the only other time I'll swap lens safety for slight loss in image quality.
