Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

you look at the canon 400mm 5.6? it's around the price range of the 100-400. i'm sure the prime will do better at 400 than the zoom, and you already have the 28-300 for rest of range? just an idea

Never really thought about using a prime lens for taking pics of bikes. Just figure that I wouldn't ever be close enough to need anything less than the 100 and any decent spots would be under 400 so that'd be a good range to not need to carry around multiple lenses. Only switching out when coming into the paddock probably.

But I have a friend selling their 100-400 for $1k even which is also why I'm seriously considering it now.
Even most ebay sales that I've looked at recently seem to sell for the high 900s or low 1000s.

Still have to work on convincing Barb that I can be trusted to roam around the track safely :angel

also a good idea to try renting either of the lenses before buying. or maybe borrow the lens from your friend to see if you like it first

I have the 100-400 lens. It's not a bad lens. Its just not as sharp as the 400 prime at 400. But zooms were never known to be as sharp as primes. 1k is a good price if it's a good copy

noob question. so there's tons of info on how to take pics of fireworks, but how should I set up my Canon T3+ 18-55 kit lens to take pics of my kids' faces when the fireworks go off w/ no flash? Is that even possible?

the light bouncing off their face during fireworks will still be pretty minimal i'd imagine... tripod and high iso probably only way without faster lens or flash

thanks for the info. I do have the 50mm 1.8 and may try that.

So, given my proclivities to take macro photos and general photography. A certain someone in this thread suggested the following.

Nikon AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 85mm f/3.5G ED VR Lens

What are the pros and cons for that particular lens?

Also, now for an epic noob question.

What lens allows you to take photos akin to this? Been searching everywhere to find specifics and I've yet to come up with anything.

Appreciate that!

Any recommendations on one? Totally a noob in this regard, I know I'm going to rent/borrow one from a friend to see if I'd eventually like to get one.

. . . just saw prices for said Tilt Lens, holy hell they're expensive.

Also, I'd like suggestions on camera flashes.

The camera in question is a D40 too.

Indeed tilt shift lens are expensive. You can get similar results using lens with a large aperture. Just be sure to get enough blur in the foreground and background. You can also do the similar results with software but I've haven't done that yet.

obscura - get the sb800 or the newest sb900 for flash, but it's going to set you back close to $300/$400 - about the street value of your d40. i have been lugging around the 800 in my bag, but have never actually used it. i guess i'm just a hardware geek. i don't like shooting with a flash, i have a ton of fast primes. tilt shift is crazy expensive and not all that practical in my opinion.

Just checking back in to restate how much I fucking HATE that fake miniature look, and will be biding my time while the fad passes.

Thank you, that is all.

*Makes plans to take pictures of ONick so he'll finally look miniature*

:love

You can get the tilt shift effect using photoshop, no need for a lens
Yeah, there's endless guides you can find through Google search on how to do the tilt/shift effect with regular photos. Here's some I did of Chinatown in S.F. a couple years back:

And even do actual tilt/shift effects that those lenses were designed for.

Unfortunately, most of the modern ones don't let you adjust tilt & shift independently.

I'll just have to tinker around and see what my options are, since finances are limited at this time, I may just go the digital route and/or borrow the lens when I can.

Appreciate all the information!

my turn to ask a question! :laughing the last few years ive been using a 70-300 for motogp but this year ill be bringing a 400mm prime as well (on a d300s). aside from the weight should i use a monopod with something that long?
