Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

I bought that same thing from a guy on BARF, D60 with kit lens and strap for 280, and then a bag and remote afterwards for another 30.

Great camera for the new to DSLR noob, I love mine :teeth

Last minute photographer needed

Wednesday evening, January 16th.

Harlem Globetrotter and a current member of the SF 49ers will be in Alviso. A photographer has been requested by the organizing parties. Somebody either lend me one, or offer to shoot this event.

Do it.

PM for details.

anyone here curious about the 6D? full frame, image quality as good as the MKs but at ~1k less? I hear the only areas the MKiii is better is burst fire, weatherproofing and focusing.

They look great for the money, but there were a few things that held me back from picking one up and going with the 5D3 instead. First, I don't want essentially the same AF as my 5D2. The center in the 6D is supposed to be great, but the outer points are supposed to be equal to the 5D2 (so not very good). Also, I use the joystick all the time, and I really don't want a camera without it. I also have really large hands, and I wanted the larger form of the 5D3. Finally, I wanted something with dual card slots. Looking forward to being able to shoot on SD and have everything backed up on a CF card.

So, I think it comes down to what you're going to use it for. I found the AF on the 5Dii alight, but I did get OOF shots often using outer points. I got tired of that and am looking forward to having an awesome AF system. That's worth the extra money to me, but it might no be to you.

Also, you'd be better off just getting a 5D2. You can find mint ones for $1100. If you don't need the high-iso performance, then it would probably be just as good as the 6D.

Ha, I was just about to ask why you went with the MKiii vs the 6D in the recent purchases thread. What you're saying makes a lot of sense. Hardly a choice at all if you're going from the MKii, but for someone like me that's been shooting with the T2i, and was even considering upgrading to the 7D for more button controls, the 6D seems very attractive. I need a battery pack to make these smaller cameras fit in my hands. unfortunate what you say about the outer focus points though.

Yea, I think you'd be happy with a 6D. Full frame is awesome, and depending on what/how you shoot, it will do things crop cameras can't.

I'd really consider getting a used 5Dii if I were you. I think you wouldn't notice the difference between the 6D and 5Dii coming from a T2i unless you need to shoot in the super high iso range often. You'd save $700-800, which will go a long way in glass. Grab a used 70-200 and a 40 2.8 (or 35L if you have the cash). The other perk to buying a used 5Dii is that the body will hold its value for a couple years. The 5D dropped to $1200 after the 5Dii was released, and stayed in the $900-1100 range for several years. It wasn't until the 5Diii was released that it dropped to the $600 range. The 5Dii will likely do the same. Just a way you can save some cash and still get the features you're interested in.

Has the 5DII finally started to come down in price? When the 5DIII came out, the used 5DII's didn't go down much at all because of how much more expensive the 5DIII's were. I still own and shoot with my 5DII, and I still have not found any excuse to upgrade to the 5DIII.

Yea, they were holding for a while, but now that the 5Diii has come down in price and the 6D is avaialbe, they've dropped a lot. Their new price is still $1800, but you can find super mint used ones for $1100-1200 on FredMiranda forums.

5D classics are going for 600-800. All that money you save can go to some L glass.

Sister's boyfriend recently finished a bunch of work on his car and wants some photos of it this weekend.
Anybody care to share some great, scenic local spots? I'm looking for both daylight and night shots.

Close to the south bay would be nice, but we'd be willing to go to SF if it's a great spot :)

It's a white car if that helps with the recommendations.

Thanks in advanced!

Hey Solomon,

Take a look at Country View Drive next to Calero Res. Neat spot.

Anyone read the LensRentals.com blog? The former owner of the company makes multiple blog posts a week relating to camera/lens teardowns, testing new products, and other random crap. He sold the company a year ago, and now his job is solely to manage the blog side of things. Anyway, I got a total kick out of this post: http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2013/01/rogers-law-of-new-product-introduction

I think it applies to every new product in every hobby.

I would just look at the random spots you can pull over off of HWY 9 and 35.

I hope that isn't the only picture, because you didn't have to go no where for that shot.

Good stuff Solomon. Yeah, I like ^^^^^ too.
