Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

Link for those working with flashes that don't have PC jacks or good optical slaves:

http://strobist.blogspot.com/2009/05/universal-translator-ushers-in-new-age.html

I was on Strobist.com last night and wondered about those!

So for 2x $18.99 I can link up my D70 and my SB600 or 3x $18.99 link up the 285HV I'm spying. Up until now the commander flash seems to work fine, unless I'm outdoors in bright sunlight. Any reason why one would go with this corded solution instead of paying an additional 30% and getting the cheap Gadget Infinity radios?

100% reliability. That's about it, I guess.

Makes me wonder just how unreliable the Gadget Infinity things are. Hmm...

100% reliability vs. 70% reliability.... 10ft/20ft/30ft/xx?? range vs. 6-10ft or whatever the max length is on a 1/8" mono cord... cost differential is basically a wash.

I'll have to think that one over. I suppose if I ever did anything professional in the future I'd just buy PWs and be done with it.

EDIT: Don't the V4 Cactus triggers have 1/8 mono plugs?? If so, why not just get that. You'd have wired AND wireless for the same price ($40 for a pair of triggers).

I don't know about the cactus triggers. I think they use a PC port, but I could be wrong.

And yeah, at that price point, it's a compromise between reliability and range. Unfortunately, I can't afford a 70% trigger rate, or a 30ft limit. So the PW's are pretty much the only game in town for me.

Sorry, had a late edit to my post... See the V4s reviewed here: http://akikorhonen.org/articles.php?action=view&id=667

Are those mono plugs for the same function as the $18.99 doohickey?

Nick, Aris - just wanted to say, big thank you for the advice.

Swapped a brolly with a softbox, wound everything to zero, moved the lights so there would be less bounce off the walls, and bam - F4 for most shots, great separation from the backdrop.

Just finished a shoot with Connie (GSXR1000girl), will post up when I get permission. Had some fun with cheesy colors and a starburst filter, as well as some high-key stuff which I've never been able to pull off before.

Thanks all! Tis fun when it works :teeth

:thumbup Very cool. Connie's a good-looking woman with a ton of confidence and personality, I'll bet you've got some good stuff.

I'm sure she won't mind me posting this one then:

Much better lighting this time around. F/5 @ 42mm, the BG is nice and soft but you've got enough depth of field for eyes and face. :thumbup

(And by the way, you're exporting in Adobe RGB. Looks good on my Mac, the PC laptop fucked up the colors as expected. :laughing)

sRGB and aRGB are two different color spaces. Stick with sRGB :p. Nick already went over it earlier, but in my experiences, aRGB made all my colors dull. Compatibility is also an issue with aRGB if I recall

(Prolly a repost, but...)

Basically, AdobeRGB has a larger gamut and is able to reproduce a wider range of colors better and sRGB is handled by more devices. What to use depends on your workflow and ultimately your final output device. In an inaccurate comparison it's like working with 24-bit audio vs. 16-bit audio: the one with more info is technically better but not every device is going to reproduce it correctly and in many cases the difference doesn't matter and many people cannot tell the difference.

I use AdobeRGB and if I ever need to output to a device that only does sRGB I can always convert it and color-match it then.

definite improvement on the lighting. :thumbup

This is just personal preference, but when I do face close ups (of women especially) I like to try to blow out the skin. Most of the women that I know don't like to show the pores on their face.

S'funny you should say that, that's exactly what I did after - I was working up to it, but never recaptured THAT expression. I guess I can push it using Curves.
And yes, the pore thing was mentioned :laughing

Still haven't managed to find the time to sort the rest yet, some are on my Facebook, but I'll put a link to my Flickr as soon as I can get around to it.

I did 800 shots with Danni yesterday (I'm fucking TIRED!) and the first 100 are really 'meh', but then they really come alive. Kinda tapers off a bit at the end as we both got tired I reckon, but still a coupla jems. Some don't require PP at all, so quite happy with that. Will post up when I get approval.

Also did a shoot with Michael - first nude male shoot. Man, TOTALLY different lighting requirements. Lighting as soft as I use for gals, looks horrid. Harsher shadows and his low bodyfat make for some great back pics. I'll post up a link, we tried to do the 'Hemispheres' naked man pose from the Rush album, came out not-quite-there, but still cool.

Anything to share from these shoots?
