I really like my D40 Nikon starter kit from Costco with two lenses and the 2 gig card. $650. Deal!

Something like this would be a good way to go? (body & lens)

just to make sure: you are focusing with a half-press first, then fully pressing the shutter button at the time you want the pic, right?
D40 > Rebel, cheaper and a better kit. The only caveat is that you can't use lenses without built in AF, which is most lenses. For the amateur noob like you and me, that's not a problem.

Sorry, I meant built in AF motor. I think the industry name for it is AF-S and AF-I. So if you want AF on any lenses you buy, make sure it's one of those two types.
Most lenses DON'T have built in AF?

until you look at the price of lenses...
Wow, where'd you score that deal??No kidding!!! Silence warned me about that when I inquired about getting either the Nikon D40 or the Olympus E410. I know what he means now.
A DSLR is a whole new ball game and opens up a whole new photographic world. Initially, I wanted to get a DSLR for the same exact reasons the OP wants a DSLR. Once I got it and watched the included videos I started playing with all the different settings and have been shooting mostly using just the manual settings. Loving it. Oh, I ended up getting the Nikon D40 with 2 lenses, 2GB card, bag, and 2 videos for $575. I'm now trying to save up to get a wide angle lens.
