I got it at ritzcamera.com. It was actually $550 for the package but I bought a 2 GB card for $25, no tax and no shipping. They were having that special for one week only, so that pretty much made up my mind for me as to which camera to get being the cheap bastid that I am. :laughing:laughing I just checked and they are selling the same package for $599 without the sd card.
 
The Rebel has a 'turn on to taking picture' time of something silly like 0.125 seconds.

Tho, if it futzes with focussing - which it sometimes does in low-light, that goes out the window.

However, if you're on the subject, hovering over the button, it's instant. I think it'll shoot 3fps (depending on shutter speed) too.

Is it fair to compare the D40 to the Canon? It's a 6mp versus an 8...

Of course, there's a valid argument that for most people, 8mp is overkill. Have to admit, for most snaps I have it on 4mp... And even like that, I've got 50GB of pictures (!).
 
Sony's alpha series DSLRs have a feature that reads your eye ball and focuses instantly. Wonder if thats what you are looking for....
 
Ant, I'm thinking about selling my D80 with an AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm glass (with VR) if you're interested.

Ok, so I'm threatening to buy a digital SLR again... If only to try it out and get it out of my system. My budget is $500. Possible? Of course as with anything, the more money you spend, the better quality you get. I don't have an delusions of being published in National Geographic, but I do want to have more control over my pictures than my POS POS Sony camera (which is 5 years old). Also I am tired of "faking" DoF with Photoshop and it would be nice to just take the picture correctly the first time around.

What is possible for $500? I am thinking Craigslist is probably the best way to go on such a tight budget, but I really have no idea. Can I get a decent body and (prime?) lens for that price? Another consideration: what could I buy and then sell in 6 months without losing much money? I am guessing most of this stuff holds it's value well enough, no?
 
buy a used canon rebel XT or XTI. should be able to get into that for under 400 with a kit lens. save up and buy GOOD GLASS. or rent what u need when u need it.

i have an XT and im super happy with it. i can post up some pics or link u to pictures ive taken with it

also, i bought a ''nifty fifty'' lens for 90 bucks :) its a great prime for the money. its so cheap cuz its cased in plastic, and not metal like other lenses

What the difference between XT and XTI? Age? Features?

Concerns about buying used gear?
 
Nikon D40 kit, brand new under $500.

Nikon's entry level lenses are much better than their canon counterparts, and the D40 is an awesome little camera. You'll be able to learn and practice everything you want to, it can be as manual or as automatic as you want, and it's compatible with about 50 years worth of lenses, if and when you decide to move up. One of my favorite lenses on my camera is a 40 year old manual focus 50/1.4 that's about the size of a big walnut, and solid as a rock. Can't do that with the Xti. :twofinger
 
When I was shooting professionally, Canon was what all the pros were shooting..

Now, it's evened up a bit, but I still like the Canon EF lens lineup much more so than the Nikon lineup.

Remember - you're investing in the system with regards to which body you pick.
 
Ahh yes! Well I am not looking to get married to a brand just yet. I'd likely sell whatever I get in 6 months or a year when it comes time to upgrade. I guess the trick finding something that would hold it's value the best.

But then with a $500 budget... realistically, I wonder if the delta between brand depreciation is really worth worrying about.
 
Nikon D40. You can't go wrong. The kit lens will be more than enough to get you started. Get that used from bhphoto.com for peace of mind.
 
From the sound of it, you will be more than fully met by any entry level DSLR. Keep in mind that it becomes a bitch to carry them all over the place.

I got the same 50mm when the dawg pulled my Rebel Xt onto the floor and broke the stock 18-55 lens :cry Took 3 months to get it fixed, so got the fiddy. GREAT lens for portraits, F1.8, so it's easy to wack the aperture wide open and still run ~100th second, indoors, at 400 ASA. :thumbup

The Rebel was/is SO popular, there have to be lots around used, in good condition.

FYI, I'm up to 38,000 frames shot and still going strong...

'Peace of mind' meaning that you get what is shown on the website. There are a lot of shady photography websites on the internet that like to sell you only part of what usually comes in the box from the manufacturer. So, usually, if the price is too good to be true for photo equipment on the internet, it usually is.

B&H & Amazon are always reliable.
 
Yeah, the Canon's aren't backward compatible, but my impression was that the metering didn't work on manual Nikon lenses? You can always use the LCD to verify exposure... At least you can fit the Nikon lenses. Ditto Pentax's. Not Canon's...

I think the Canon comes with more features at the same price point, but the Nikon arguably has better lenses.

I'm not a good enough photographer to get the benefit from better lenses most likely, so went for more features.

You pays yer money, takes yer choice.
 
One major difference between Nikon and Canon is that Nikon uses in-camera image stabilization, whereas Canon uses in-lens.

Professionals will tell you that in-lens is better. However, that means that if you own 5 lenses, you have to pay for the image stabilization system 5 times, which gets expensive. With the Nikon, you only pay for it once, in the camera body.
