Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

Okay, so this is a comparo of prime Vs. Zoom, a virginal Sigma 70-300mm f/3.5-5.6 on its first (and last, in my bag) outing, and a rented and heavily used canon 300mm f/2.8 L prime. Same corner, similar lighting conditions, same focal length. Make sure to click on them to see the full res. Barf has resized them to appear on the page.

Sigma 70-300mm f/3.5-5.6:

And the Canon 300mm f/2.8:

Granted the subject in the latter is much closer, but otherwise, its about as scientific as I can manage out of my gallery at present.

Yikes!

Are you sure you used the same camera? :laughing

(What did you use?)

Whoops you're right. Different bodies between these two. the first is my Canon 10d, the second with its replacement, my current 40d. But the 100% crops should be pretty indicative of lens performance, not body performance. I'd anticipate the 300mm prime would perform just as well on the 10d, and vice versa.

well a 25% crop would mean the photo is viewed at 25% of the original size. so 100% is showing image at original size, then cropped so it doesnt take up your whole screen

Here's a quick example to illustrate the 100% crop concept for you:

My little test is going to be more involved than I expected, so I'll have to do it on Sunday when I have some time to do it right. I'll post on Monday.

Boss just got the 100mm f2.8L IS Macro... it's so freakin hot on the 5d Mk. II. Such amazing bokeh.

Random picture from the road. Nikon D40x, 85mm f/1.4, manual focus because the body doesn't have a motor built in. This was yesterday at the Gulf of Mexico. I'll be home Tuesday. :teeth :ride

Any good photography schools in San Francisco? I'd like to learn how to use a Canon 50D to take nice pics of my bike and the places I go.
