Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

cause in the studio there's no ambient light...flash overpowers the modeling lights...

Heavily backlit images, two completely different looks. First one was supposed to be available light, relatively high ISO and slow shutter speed, but the other photographer's flash went off in the background.

Second was from the first dance, totally didn't work in color/etc due to lens flare, so made it B&W and ramped the contrast through the roof, leaving just a touch of detail within the silhouette. Thoughts/opinions/etc?

Considering stepping up to a D200. This weekend taught me that my manual focus skills are inadequate to operate at f/1.4. Net cost to buy one and sell the D40x would be about $200.

How much are D200s selling for?!

Regarding autofocus, can't you just spin the focus ring until the green light in the viewfinder illuminates?

Stay the hell off of Craigslist right now, the $500 one is MINE. :laughing

Any yes, you can watch the focus dot, but the combination of a small viewfinder and the fact that even stopped down to f/2.8 the critical depth of field on the 85mm is only inches deep made for more missed shots than I can accept this weekend.

So, funds are tight, but it's my 40th coming up soon. There's a tiny sliver of a chance that a 5D Mk2 is on the cards.

If not, I'm tempted to tell everyone to put their cash in a pot and wait until I can add enough of my own to get it...

OR...

...get an L lens instead? Something like this:

OR...
this?

I'm more tempted by the more expensive (duh!) 24-70, because it's a faster lens, AND because it reviews better. But neither is exactly crap.

Bearing in mind, this is for a lowly XTi... which is why I'm tempted to just wait for the 5D, even if it means carrying on using my non-L 50mm and 70-300 lenses...

Just got some new gear:

Canon Eos 7D
70-200 2.8L IS
17-55 2.8 IS
50 1.4

Looking forward to documenting my riding adventures. Any recommendations on a pack sturdy enough to ride with while protecting my gear?

Ian, I love my 24-70, and is very versatile. If you want, you can try mine out before you buy. As soon as I get my 70-200 issue fixed, my next lens will be the 16-35. I have decided to hold off on a FF body.

Sweet setup. I am now using a Lowepro Flipside 400, and like it a lot. It will easily hold all the stuff you listed above, with a battery grip, and an external flash easy, and may even be able to hold a second body with the 50 attached if you so wished.

Thanks for the input guys :)

John, may well take you up on that! I actually have a shoot pencilled in for this Sunday, but the female model isn't giving me warm-fuzzy-communication glows, and the male model has to come a long way - so he wants cast-iron confirmations that have yet to appear - will PM you if I get that, or post up in here if not.

I have heard great things about the 24-70, which is why I'm contemplating it before getting the 5d.

If only I could afford both *sigh*
