Dirty BARFers at Moab Fall 2016

Here is the expedition all gathered together on the Slickrock trail. We were going to ride it again since Lunchbox hadn't of done it yet. It's definitely one of those trails you have to try at least once because there's definitely nothing like it in our neck of the woods. We rode it much faster than last time though. I had thought that I would just blaze through this since it's my second time but that didn't seem to be the case with fatigue from many days of Moab riding still lingering. I realize that when your super tired like this you have to RIDE with the bike rather than trying to muscle it. Use different muscles to get the bike to move.

So I took a wrong turn somewhere and was just following the trail marker lines and I come up to a point where it just stops and looks very unfamiliar. It was a look out. Unexpected but good time for a photo break :) Here's the view down, it doesn't look steep but that's several hundred feet drop there.

Here's the trail leading to the lookout. There were two mountain bikers there chillin and Lunchbox and had taken the wrong turn with me.

So nothing too dramatic this time around. We blazed through it in an hour with like 1 or 2 rest breaks. I had a tumble going around a corner when I dabbed the brake at the wrong time the front slid out and I had a lowside. Picked the bike up and continue on. I tried to follow the line as best I could but I wasn't doing so hot. At one section it took a 90degree turn and I blew past it and almost went down a steep hill. Other than that no problem. I also got all the tracks for the slickrock trail since my GPS ran out of juice last time.

The next trail we did was the Porcupine Rim trail. It was gnarly, pretty much as tough as all the rough stuff we've been doing before. There were several tough ledges to clear, rocks, sand, and slickrock. Yeah pretty much everything. But it was worth it for the view at the end!

So a handful of us took an easy out way instead of going back on that gnarly trail, didn't bother me one bit I don't like doubling back I like exploring new trail. It was a little gnarly for a bit and then turned into a gravel road riding through the canyons. Here lunchbox and Jackson are sitting on top of a rock that has a ramp on the top of it. We caught up to them and we found them here.

Love it! Neat seeing 2 strokers still tearing it up. I'm just getting back into dirt riding but I must do this ride someday!!!

This just may be the best photo thread on BARF to date.
Fantastic job!
I can't wait for you guys to come back, I have so many questions.

More pics from the full group going up Porcupine Rim and encountering obstacles. This shows the teamwork involved. One would attempt to ride his bike up the difficult steps. One would be positioned left or low. One would be positioned right or high. One spotter would point out the good line. Two or three would be positioned with cameras hoping to catch an epic fail.

Moab is wearing us down. I heard someone say yesterday, "I am not going to ride tomorrow." Some planned easy rides. A quadtard planned a ride on his SportQuad, which is not epic Moab dirt biking. Lunch Box did a street ride, which is not epic Moab dirt biking.

A core group of badass MF'ers planned to do Poison Spider trail. And Jackson tagged along.

We stopped at the Indian petroglyphs along the river. A tourist told us they depicted alien astronauts but I swear that big one looks exactly like South Park's characterization of Satan.

Satan_(South_Park).jpg

From the Poison Spider staging area we could look across the Colorado river valley and see the Kane Creek staging area from our previous trip to Hurrah Pass/Chicken Corner.

IMG_0501-L.jpg

Looking the other way was the cliff side of Poison Spider mesa, which we would climb.

IMG_0502-L.jpg

There were some difficult obstacles right away. I took a hard route and fell when my tire went sideways. It should have hooked up. I would return and get my revenge on the way back.

The rock obstacles did not have traction like "slickrock" and much of the rock had a layer of sand. Both AnyTwoWillDo and I dropped tire pressure in the hope of gaining traction.

One of the less difficult climbs did have a steep end you couldn't see over. Eric B wheelied over it only to find a small, full "hot tub" for an epic fail into the water. He picked it up before I could whip out my still camera but I have it on my helmet cam for viewing later.

IMG_0503-L.jpg

The rock obstacles did not have the traction of slickrock and were polished by 4x4s. Much of it had a layer of fine sand which made things very, very difficult.

IMG_0505-L.jpg

I stopped at a climb to see Jackson at the top of an obstacle, waving me to an easy bypass. I had a second look. There was a shallow V with sand, doable, and the sides of the V looked easily rideable. It wasn't even steep or bumpy. Just a little off camber, no problem for even my worn trials tire. Maybe it's a problem if you wore your tires on the fire road to Hurrah Pass.

I think there were four major climbing obstacles before we got up on a flat section where the trail turned into a road.

IMG_0506-L.jpg

The views were good.

IMG_0507-L.jpg

We came from that way.

IMG_0508-L.jpg

We did a bunch of slickrock and some sand, which was a lot like Slickrock bike trail. I circled a hole like I was getting flushed down a toilet and that may make for some interesting video later. The others were sure confused about what I was doing.

We intersected with the Portage bicycle trail at the rim above Moab.

IMG_0509-L.jpg

With a little more slickrock we took a break in a cave with a group of SxS. When they left I took this picture from the inside looking out.

IMG_0514-L.jpg

We did a little of Golden Spike trail, I think, more slickrock, with cool uphills and downhills, including one amazing G out. We returned to the trucks when Jackson whined about being tired.

Sorry haven't had time to write, edit pictures etc. Been riding!!

Pulled into town around 11am, and I headed straight to the slickrock trail while I waited for other folks to arrive.

Day 5 was a free day for everyone to do whatever you want. Many people went out and rode. I decided to do some of the easier trails on my quad. I dragged Wall-E all the way from the bay I had to get some more good riding on him.

The first ride I did was to a place called Picture Frame Arch. The staging area was only a few miles south of our base right next to the freeway too. The type of riding that day was sandy desert, with some rocks rocks and ledges, and throw in some dunes for fun :)
