Do You Mountain Bike?

So what do you guys recommend in the way of disc brakes. Right now I have Hayes 9 hydraulic discs with 8" rotors(although the 8" on the rear is too much)

I'm getting tired of messign with the Hayes and want to upgrade, anyone got a good deal on a set of used? Recommend anything new?

TIA

I haven't tried any of the new radial piston style brakes (new Shimano and Hayes Strokers), but those look nice. I'd try the Hayes first.

The Formula brakes have been the hot item the past year or so... lots of power and great modulation, but not cheap.

I have been running Hayes Mags for a while and like them better the most of the other stuff out there. If you're not soured on Hayes, I have a set of Mags I could set you up with.

And I'm sure Harpo will pipe in with Avid Juicy praise shortly. Hope this helps. Good Luck!! :cool

I have been using Avid Mechanical discs for the last 5 years and I don't think I will ever go back to hydrualic brakes, you can adjust the amount of bite the brakes have and I have had zero fade even riding up at North Star

Just my 2 bits :thumbup

Stick with the same brand, they all are pretty good, and the new stuffs adjustable.
Hayes brakes need Hayes adapters, Avid work best with Avid.
I run 6/6 on XC rigs and 8/7 for AM.
A good bleed should keep you in shape for a long time.

I'm looking at a set of Hayes Stroker Trails on ebay for $250 delivered 7" front and Rear.

Seems like a good bargain and a quality set of brakes. I've been running the Hayes 9's and am tired of dicking with them. Just want to buy some nice brakes and be done with it.

Decent price, I went with Juicy 7s because; they were tested by peeps I know, and I got them from someone I know, I like the caliper mounting design.

I'm sure some one has some local.

I'm afraid to ask DKing about parts for fear of turning into a parts hoarder.

I ended up buying the Hayes. I hope they turn out to be nice, all the reviews were positive. I like the Avids as well but they have sorta a mushy lever plus I like the radial design of the Hayes. I obviously didn't even need something like that I was just tired of hassling with the brakes and wanted to just put something on there and be done with it

I ended up going with 7" front and rear. The 8" on the rear right now is way overkill and the rear locks up instantly

$250 delivered is a decent price... that's about the cheapest BIN I've seen on eBay. If you're willing to bid, there's a seller that lists sets twice a week or so with each size rotors and they usually get bid up to $200 + $25 shipping, so you could save $25 if you care and are patient.

...snipped... I'm afraid to ask DKing about parts for fear of turning into a parts hoarder.

You definitely don't want to do that... trust me :rolleyes

Sorry for the hijack, but I have a pair of Hayes 8" rotors for sale that were used ONCE. They look like this (except they are clean):

$40
