I've been wearing a Rado Jubile for the last 20 years. I wear it because I can beat the crap out of it and the wear it for dress up if needed. It's nearly indestructible and believe me I've tried!

Every time I see this thread am tempted to respond... nah.
Or rather, today, I wore the iWatch for two hours because it is an awesome iLeash. But no one needed me...
 
My dad gave me this a few months before he passed away.

When I first got it, I didn't wear it that much since I was tripping on wearing a watch that was worth more than my monthly income at the time. Then I realized he would have wanted me to actually wear it. So now I wear it whenever I can, as you can see from the patina.

I just got the newer Apple Watch, love it. The only watch I need now, throwing my old watches away.

What a great thing to have a memory of your dad on you all the time. I’ve always liked Tags and that’s a really good one.

Thank you! What's cool is he knew I was into watches, but that I could never afford a nice one. I used to collect old tankers from the 1930s and 40s. Would buy them on eBay, put on a new crystal, clean up the case, add a new band, replace face or hands sometimes, and resell (disclosing all the work that I did, BTW).

Also went through a "Swiss Elgin" phase for a while. Would do same thing. It was super relaxing working with the small parts for some reason.

Re: the new smart watches. . .

I had digital watches back when they were using red leds. I think I like mechanical watches now because their technology is around 350 years old.

Four centuries from now, even assuming no EMP, the current smart watches won't have any value. But mechanical watches can be repaired eternally. It's just a matter of replacing a few rubies, two escapement pallets, and maybe a spring, every few hundred years. This sort of link that can potentially span millennia has appeal to me.

(or unless it's even a 2008+ or so)

Thank you! I don't think it's the newer one (the buttons are different). I'd have to pull out the papers to know when he bought it. He told me he bought it when he was on a cruise. That's not the greatest provenance. That being said, I did have a jeweler look at it, and he said that it was worth around $3000. So I am pretty sure it's real. Of course, that was when I first got it. It's now got a lot of scratches and stuff now.

Even if it was a really good replica, I would still love it, just like how I loved my dad. Not to get all philosophical and stuff, but in life - we all end up with a lot of scratches, and sometimes we ourselves wonder whether we are fake or real. I myself struggle with imposter syndrome often because I have a "grown up" work position these days.
