Do you wear a watch?

Oh so Th Seiko automatic my friend got is dual English and Arabic like the ones we were discussing except it briefly shows Arabic day before showing English if you move it forward a bit it will switch to brief English and mostly Arabic.

Tell me about this watch after you have used it a bit. I may be in the market for a Garmin. A time piece to train with would be cool. I really want to know if its easy to use and actually helpful.

It's my third fitness watch. Had a Fitbit Ionic, followed by a Garmin ForeRunner 645. I find real time HR data very useful for pacing myself during hard climbs. This one introduces a ton of information that I'm only just starting to incorporate into my training. I use it in conjunction with Strava and some other mapping software for long term tracking, GPS routes, and trip planning.

Super fitness dork review, with comparison to some other options:

Thanks for the input! Why did you move on from the ForeRunner 645?

Bought Timex expedition a while back. So far held up to regular abuse with no scratches.
It shows time, date, analog, has backlight you can turn on to see time at the dark, and has utilitarian design. Perfect.
shopping

I saw one at Target the other day and thought it looked good enough to use as a beater. The thing that gets me is the ticking in rather loud. To the point where I can't sleep with it on. Unless I'm really drunk.

yeah my Timex snoopy watch is pretty dang loud. I can hear it tick when I'm in my car with the music off and the A/C on. It stays in my watchbox with the lid closed, otherwise I would hear it ticking when I'm trying to sleep. :laughing

Originally I thought it would bug me too while falling a sleep, but haven't proved to be the case.

The Fenix has some pretty good navigation tools built in, along with a pulse oximeter. It also has much better battery life, important when a big climb day can have you on your feet and moving for 18-24 hours straight. For my application, which is more mountaineering than trail running, it's a better option. No complaints on the 645. If you're looking at triathlons, there are some multisport devices that do all aspects of that.

Maybe we should move this to the time to get for thread. :)

so, uh, what you doin with the old Ionic laying around gathering dust? :teeth

The G-shocks are Dope but I have a thing against wearing digital watches

I know, they are tool watches though, they serve a very rugged and or adventurous purpose depending on model. IIRC The guy who started them got a watch from his dad and he was out hiking and he broke it and was really butt hurt about it and decided to start making watches that couldn't break(easily)

So uhhh, pocket watches are from a time when dudes wore hats, three piece suits, with tie pins on the regular. A cool look. But I don’t know shit about these things. What do I have here?

This was my great grandmother’s. Which she may have gotten from my great great grandfather (don’t know for sure) which would make more sense since while I’m sure it happened here and there, I think pocket watches were mostly carried by men. I think it’s ~100 years old. Sometime along it’s life a necklace chain was put on.

It still fucking works!

I’ve tried my best google-fu, and I can’t find this thing. Just about every pocket watch is in a round case. I managed to find some Hamiltons with the same case, but different dial/hands, or the design in the middle of the dial is different.

Not going to dare try and open the back myself. So I am going to take it to a professional to have it serviced/cleaned. Any recommendations in the South Bay or peninsula area?

Hamilton's were pretty common as I recall. Opening the back is not as difficult as you think and without accessing it and getting the serial number, you'll be guessing for life. If it's a Railroad Grade watch, that's even better unless it was a common model.

Probably from the 1920s. The second web site lists $30-$50 estimate.

Yeah that’s all I could find. Close but no cigar. Case matches though. Didn’t figure it’s worth anything but that doesn’t matter since it will stay in my family forever. I’m still amazed that it started working as soon as I wound it.
