Doc Wong: I Hit A Full Size Deer... Video

Did you see it and not hit the brakes immediately thinking it would stay where it was, or did you just not see it until you hit the brakes?

Deer are invisible. This one likely showed up on the periphery and stopped (so as not to stand out as motion to our innate "DON'T EAT ME!" periphery motion detector). Then, it patiently waiting while doing the internal calculus to judge exactly when to launch and get T-boned by at bike at speed.

As you can see, in the video, the deer was at a full run, and by the time I saw it, it was too late. I didnt see it until it was half way into the opposing lane.

I'm sure an air vest would have significantly reduced my injuries. I’m reevaluation my gear now!

Klim makes a good one Doc.

Standard faire for me now.

I stuck with the standard jacket. Had to buy a size up to allow the vest to inflate. Never happened so that is good.

Keep healing Doc.

Sorry Doc, I missed the detail that you were hurt, I thought you bounced right back up. Hope you’re feeling better soon!

I’m sure if i installed one of these, my luck will get better? :teeth

Ok, I’m getting deer whistles. Then I’ve seen riders put a little bell on the motorcycle… where can i get one? ;-)
I’m pretty sore but healing up well. Thought I broke my collar bone but it only got pushed out of place. As the swelling goes down I’ll get out put back. In 50 years of riding this year was a new experience for me with random stuff happening not in my control.

Laughing still hurts though. :teeth

Hell…I’ll get a heavier bike. That deposit I have on the new 1300GS is looking pretty attractive. I hear it’s deer proof…

That sucks Keith. Glad limping is all that is wrong.

How is the bike?

WTF is up with posting pics of dead deer? like if there was a deer internet, as fucked up as they are, would they be posting up pics of dead riders?

keep that shit to yourself.

I meant to ask Budman, on the Klim vest, did you buy it outright or "get the subscription"?

I hit a deer on Palomares Rd about two weeks after I got my license.
Luckily, being such a noob, I wasn't going very fast. Slowed to probably 20-30 mph tops on impact.

This idiot was staring right at me when he decided to yeet himself right into my path.
It smacked the front wheel and bounced into the bushes, and ran off.
Fortunately, My bike stayed upright and kept on down the road with my nerves frayed and a nice story I wouldn't tell my wife for a couple months.

Glad we're ok!

Stay safe y'all.

• Had a deer jump over me, my speed, maybe 35 mile an hour. The hoofs were right in front of my face, at helmet level. No contact.

• was doing 70 MP Bear Creek 6 AM;…a running dear from the right\ ~me full lock, ABS brakes and Leading the deer to the left all the way across both lanes, almost too a stop estimate @3 mph\ hit the deer On its legs: it jumped up and backed away then continued to run off to the left side and was gone in the bushes. At home I looked for scuff marks, but there was nothing.

Damn Keith that is some damage to the ride.
Hope you had full coverage. Paid off for me when I struck a rat.

And the pic is fine by me by the way. We have no deer surfing barf.

I got the subscription. In the two years I have had it I have gotten two updates. What those are?? :dunno

Ugh.

Glad you sound like you might be physically OK.

I had removed my tailbag last week, it had my bell in it. This was literally the first ride I had gone on without the gremlin bell!

Yup, full coverage, thankfully $50 deductible. Already filed a claim, sent in pix and talked with the adjuster. He said he'll have my preliminary estimate Tuesday and then we'll see about getting it to a duc shop for a more in depth once over.

I'm definitely feeling it today but doing surprisingly well. Limping around some but if that's all I got, I'll thank my lucky stars I'm still here to talk about it!

Good luck with the claim.

Hope it goes smooth and the deerPUNISHER is back soon. :Port

Wow, glad you’re OK. Sucks, but looks like we’ll heal well!

What’s the deal with those little bells. I heard that they must be given to you by someone else?
