DRZ400SM tire recommendations?

The main reason I always do sets is cause I like to try new rubber and like the feel of new profile.

Another quick question from a noob.... Am I correct in thinking that if i stick with the stock size tires, I won't have to buy a new wheel in addition to the tire? or are they usually included with tire?
You'd need a new rim/wheel only if you change the diameter size of the tire - 16 vs. 17, etc. Going from a 140 to 150 or 160 (width) is usually ok for the same rim, just watch for the wider tire possibly rubbing on your swingarm, chain, or other parts.

Bigger width jumps, like going from 140 to 170 (or 150 to 180, etc.) rarely work - you'd likely need a (new) wider rim if you change by more than one or two width sizes. Again, watch for clearance issues.

Some supermotos come with two sets of wheels - they come with street tires on the smaller diameter rims, and dirt-only knobbies on larger diameter wheels (taller w/longer spokes).

Wheels/rims are lots more expensive than tires, and therefore don't come 'included' when tire buying; they can be bought separately IF needed.

Hope that helps.

As i understand from the above posts, most of you suggest the Avon Distanzias. Good ! Do you think they will be fine if i want to run my bike on a supermoto track and street. [fyi - i will be a newbie on supermoto track[]

Evenutually, i want to buy an extra set of wheels, but that's for dirt use with knobbies.

will a 160 even fit on the rear of a drz sm? im running IRC trials gp1 tires. they work great on the street and better offroad! thinking about throwing my conti's back on but if a 160 will fit the rear of my sm, then ill get new rubber! ive got a 150 conti rear currently

It depends on the 160 I wouldn't really suggest it though.

thanks, i looked at the rear and was like, there is no way a 160 fits on a dizzr! lol maybe the above posts were talking about a ktm with a 160. just figured id ask.. lmk if anybody has fit a 160 on there 400sm

It has been done but some 160s are wider than otgers. But it adds a lot of weight and the tire get squished and deforms and makes the handling feel funny. From what i heard from people who tried it.

nice, thanks for the info Aaron. I guess i wont be trying that out. The 150 feels great and nimble!

Josh - when i bought my bike it came with a 160 rear - Michellin Pilot Power. I did not face any issues with handling. But, i ride slow and never took it to the track.

I will be moving to the Distanzias suggested above (once the Michellins give up) & i believe most are running 150 there.

Weird cause they make the pilot powers in a 150.

I slapped on 160 on my 450 EXC KTM. The chain rub was crazy. I had to shave some of the sides. The Conti's profile were the least i had to shave. Dunlop, Michellin, and Battlax 160 I had to shave big time. I go back and forth between 150 and 160 dont really feel the difference on the street.
On the 690 SMC I only use 160. BTW just ordered new Q2's rear from motorcyclesuperstore. com 2 day free shipping for $112 they had special on Dunlop's last week. This week they have Pirelli specials.

I think the OP should just flip a coin...Or roll some dice. Its all a matter of preference.

I recommend staying at the same table and using a three sided die.

You save a ton of weight of you get a titanium die and carbon fiber table. Costs money though.

Sure, but most people aren't even taking full advantage of the table they've got. Unless you're rolling that die competitively, the CF is really just bling. :x

Hi,

Hijack the thread a little....I'm about to get tubes for my DRZ. Very confused by the dimensions of inner tubes and need some help.

The front I will be mounting a 120/70-17 tyre and the rear I will be mounting a 150/60-17 tyre. What would be the recommended inner tube size?

Thanks y'all!
