Dual Sport Ride, Saturday 15-Aug-2009 - Dublin to Carnegie

Bummer. I hope it wasn't a two wheeler caused fire but it looks big. We'll see but I hope it doesn't stop the ride.

That's video footage of it and yes it's Carnagie burning. Looks like the ride is going to be postponed or moved somewhere else. Your call on that Scott.
The reporting location (18500 W. Corral Hollow Road) is about 1.25 miles west of the western perimeter at Carnagie. Nobody has stated the source but the reporting location is in view of Carnagie so...It's also been updated to a 3000 acre fire and in the footage there are no on the line firefighters in view due to location and it's mostly fought by air. Not good for anyone.
I called the Ranger Station at (925) 447-9027 and there was a recorded message saying the park is closed due to fire.

Thanks for the news link. We won't be going to Carnegie Saturday.

If any of you still want to meet and go ride on pavement, I'm up for that. Maybe up Mt. Diablo and along the "goat trail" of Morgan Territory Road?

So I'll be at the meeting spot in Dublin at 8:00 a.m. anyway with my XR650L, but wearing street gear rather than dirt gear.

I'm still trying to figure out why so many people, including the news reporter, pronounce Corral Hollow like "coral" of coral reef, rather than "corral" like a horse corral.

Dude... reschedule this dual sport rid3.. I want to go!

Scott - Plus one on the coral/corral thing. Morgan Territory road sounds good so does climbing Mt. Diablo. Is it possible to loop back on Finley as Google maps says from Morgan T. Rd.? I didn't think that road went through. Your call on route but was curious if that was possible. Ideas for some longer rides I want to do (let me know if you are interested or if you have done them before and how long they took you.)
Bollinger Canyon to Moraga
Mines to 130 to Alum Rock to N. White to Calaveras

Finley is paved on the south end where it connects to Camino Tassajara, but I can almost guarantee that there is a gate across the dirt section. If you look at the satellite image of where the road connects to Morgan Territory you can see it going through somebody's yard.

I don't see any relationship between Bollinger Canyon (in San Ramon) and Moraga. You can get to Moraga by taking Redwood and Pinehurst.

I think the Mines loop you've listed includes Mt. Hamilton and San Antonio Valley Rd. I'll usually come back on Sierra, Felter, then Calaveras. I'm very familiar with those roads. For a ride that long I would rather be on my Ducati than on the Honda though.

I've done a ride several times that included going to the top of both Mt. Diablo and Mt. Hamilton. If you include a run from The Junction of Mines down Del Puerto Canyon to Patterson for gas, it's 250 miles with 200 of those miles being on good twisty roads. Kind of a mini-Iron Butt ride.

I wasn't planning to ride more than maybe 150 miles tomorrow, but I'm up for exploring new roads. Sometimes it's good to do an "I wonder where that road goes" ride.

Bummer ... Just picked up bunch stuff from Cyclegear. Next time ...

Riding on pavement sounds good. I haven't been to the east bay much. What will be you guys' pace on pavement though ...

Easy pace. We won't leave you behind. I tend to lean the bike into the corners more, but ease off on the straights so that people can catch up. For this ride, I'll do my best to ride at a pace that you're comfortable with.

Very cool. :thumbup Just want to check that it is still newbie friendly. :ride Looking forward to it.

Map says you can but satalite shows a gate to dirt road. Never sure how much to trust satalite because images are a few years old but you are right, no way through.
If I could ride all of the dirt roads in the hills shown on the maps, satellite photos, and that you can see out of an airplane window, the majority of my riding would be on dirt instead of pavement. Unfortunately, they're just about all private property with gates and fences.

I think I'm going to pass on this one if it's just going to be a "normal" street ride.

Have a good time. :thumbup

where now?

I am very disappointed about Carnegie:cry We should definitely reschedule a dirt ride. Can you provide a map of the saturday ride, some dirt trails would be nice:cool

Sounds good I think I'm still in. If I made the route I'd only change a few things. I'd say same start spot as before at Hacienda Crossing, then take Camino Tassajara to Highland to Manning to Morgan Territory Rd then follow the rest as you said. Hit Mudville Grill on Marsh Creek.

It appears we are suppossed to meet for the start at the fountain in downtown Livermore as the new map says. It's unclear to me exactly when and where though so I'm taking a similar route to your's Scott solo. Maybe I'll see you guys on the road.

The "rough approximation" map was only to show where Morgan Territory Road is at and the route up and down Mt. Diablo.

It IS NOT setting a new starting point, and I didn't even try to get the start and end points accurate for that map, just the purple line out on the road.

If you're waiting in Livermore this morning, have a nice ride - by yourself. The rest of us will be meeting at the originally agreed upon spot in Dublin.

Fancy seeing you up there. I hope Morgan T. was free of traffic like it was for me at 8am. It was a good ride, about 77 miles for me door to door. I think we did almost the same ride but in reverse directions. I look forward to a real dualy ride, hopefully it won't have to be to Hollister.

No better way to spend a Sat morning ...

Hey, it was fun catching up at the top of the hill, with photo attached. :)
Morgan T was cool!!! I like it. :teeth

Scott, thanks for the ride. Hope you had fun testing the Beamer. Look forward to the next one.

The test ride was on a Triumph. Tri-Valley Moto is only BMW on the one side, they have KTM and Triumph on the other side of the wall. And I thought it was a great bike. I don't know why anyone looking for a good cruiser would buy a Harley when they could have a bike like that.

I enjoyed the ride today up Mt. Diablo and through Morgan Territory Road. We'll definitely plan another one in September or October that will actually include some dirt. I'll post something here pointing to that ride when the time comes.

On the way back to Pleasanton I stopped in that the Arlen Ness dealership as well, to look at the interesting bikes there. Arlen himself was there showing off the customization job they had done to a new Victory Cross Country that they'll be taking to Sturgis. It's kind of cool that Arlen and Corey Ness show up at the dealership once in a while and are regular people. They're happy to talk to customers.
