Ducati Tank Swell

You think with this 15% issue yet will get wise and make a fix other than a bandaid?

i think it's a myth... ducatis are awesome and there's only one thing that swells near the gas tank when i ride one- it ain't the bike.

I still hear folks are getting replacements from ducati. Mine was replaced as goodwill. My 1098's tank swelled up near the right hand end of the steering stabilizer. Enough to rub the red paint on the stabilizer mount.

According to something, the dealers are replacing the tanks then sending them to Ducati. Ducati will then tally it up and send the bill to Acerbis. Or something like that.

Ducati is still replacing tanks, just took my S4RS in last week for this problem and a new tank is on order. the new tank should arrive sometime this week. :) gotta give Kudos to Sunnyvale Ducati for how fast they are handing this.

Soooo...you want me to tell people to follow the manufacturers instructions when using xylene...

Sorry I didnt make that clear. There I've just done it :rolleyes

Anyone can PM me if they have any questions.

:laughing

No good deed goes unpunished !

Thanks for the great info... Glad I don't have to deal with this problem, but I'm interested in the tank sealing info...

be sure that your bikes don't have any damage on them or anywhere on the tank. Ducati has been refusing to replace tanks, if they see any gouges, scrapes or anything that seems like it was damaged in a crash, drop, slide, etc... no matter how minute.
ask me how I know. have a small scrape on the sides from a fall over. :dunno

Ducati used that to refuse the replacement. currently tank is airing out. :laughing :cry

this tank is not that bad. my superduke was worst.

every bike I've owned with plastic tanks do this to some degree. (01 RSVR, 04 RSVR, 08 superduke R, 11 RC8R). never had a leak even after r/r intank fuel filters.

a pry bar/large screw driver wrapped with duct tape is part of my tool box.

Ducati offers a custom cylindrical tank receptacle as a contingency for such an event or circumstance.

My Sport Classic is on its third tank. My SF848 will get an aluminum tank (aftermarket) once I have to start paying for replacement. My '01 Monster has a trouble-free, metal tank - ahhhh the good ole days...

I also love my metal tank and I *also* get a little excited when I ride it.

High fives!

Machete, y u no have working bike? :x

Phew, for some reason I thought you were without a bike. Again. :nchantr

After telling me how awesome they are. :laughing

Here's what I have figured out in regards to tank swelling and prevention...

The gas tank is vented to the vapor recovery canister via a check-valve that resides in the gas cap ring. That check-valve results in there being a constant pressure in the tank. So, some have come to the conclusion that what is actually happening is the ethanol softens the tank plastic and the pressure maintained by the check-valve and exerted on the softened tank is what causes the distortion.

The tank on my 2010 Streetfighter started distorting within 6 months, and by the 1 year mark the paint on the top of the tank was actually splitting open in spots. I think the hot Sacramento summer exacerbated the pressure issue. Upon getting my replacement tank from Ducati I disconnected the vapor recovery canister and removed the ball-and-spring check-valve that lives in the gas cap ring. The gas tank is now freely vented and maintains no pressure. It has now been over a year and the gas tank shows no signs of distortion.

There's my cool story. YMMV, etc.

can you take a picture and point to where the ball-and-spring check valve is at? thanks.

The vent check-valve lives in that bump. Remove the gas cap and on the backside of the ring you will find a corresponding cover secured with a couple small screws. Remove the cover, take out the spring and ball, put cover back on, and re-install gas cap.

That's another reason why I love the new MTS. The plastic tank is not painted and under a tank cover. Should it swell, and Ducati doesn't want to foot the bill, it would be easy for a 2nd hand manufacturer to make a tank - just like the Hypers.

my bike has no vapor canister, and two open connection point under the tank are open. I think the prev owner set it up for racing or something:nchantr

:rofl
