Dumb-assed change to schools, they must start later in the morning.

When I was in school I seriously struggled with the early start times. 8:30 is more reasonable. Let kids out of school at the same time as before. There is so much wasted time we won't lose out on much.

Any change is always met with resistance. I remember when the seat belt laws came into effect. Huuuge cause of homelessness for the impoverished. Same with Moto helmets. More recently, HALO in F1. No one wanted it, complained it would ruin the sport and aesthetics. How many teams/drivers lost their jobs because of the inconvenience? Think of the homelessness it caused!!!

This change is based on improving the students ability to function better in school and life in general. It will benefit them in the classroom, and in sports. They will have more energy to train in said sports, and not be as burned out when it's time to practice. But you know, they'll be homeless and won't be able to play sports anymore.

There's a High school down the street from me, they have 2 schedules. One that starts at 7:30 and one that starts at 8:30. For the most part parents can choose which one to follow. It helps drop off/pick up traffic and for those choosing the later, we'll say helps the student manage better.

Perhaps this should be an option rather than a full cut over. After a few years, schools can see the trends of which schedule has kids doing better, and which schedule is more popular. Which schedule caused more homelessness etc...

Sports didn't seem to be affected much, as it followed the late schedule for obvious reasons. But you know, get off my lawn and all that.

I wonder how schools in areas with longer nighttime hours manage sports, I mean I guess they just don’t have them.

Have you raised kids?
Do you know people who are living paycheck to paycheck? Some of those people don't have much say in their jobs.

You're just looking for fault, as usual, ridiculing is not an admirable way of interacting with others, there is a certain kind of person who resorts to that.

Sorry pal, your weak "You're not even a parent" schtick doesn't work with me.

And I will absolutely ridicule anybody that says a later start time for school means people lose their homes. You're turning into a joke and I enjoy the laughs.

The question I'd ask is how many of them knew this was coming down the pike?

We will see how this all shakes out. I think the first year will be the roughest for a portion of the population.

I wonder how many of the kids will just shift their sleep time to later and still get less than 8 hours sleep. Perhaps it will be higher quality sleep, as the study says, so there would be a net gain.

I know that as a coach I'll have less daylight hours to of light to train my athletes, we are suppsed to be getting lights on our practice field, so perhaps that was the driving factor for the lights. Sports are huge in the schools down here.

You know, you could have just said that you don't have data and you are making noise. :dunno

Some of the posts in here are getting a little edgier than they maybe need to be. Let's back it off a little.

Also, politics. Let's keep it out of here.

erased my post because I did not want to add to the edgy comments.
If you have children. love them up.
Their innocence is pure until the adults get to close.

pop quiz guys are we on or off dst right now? :p

Could it be related to daylight wasting time?
You mean that shit we voted to stop doing but our dear leader decided to not do?

I'm a new dad. One of my friends that has two kids, their mind works like eldritch, very rational. But one of his rants echoes in my brain whenever I have a hard time.
"When I hear parents complaining, I don't want to hear it quit your bellyaching. You had a choice this is what you asked for..." then I chuckle and get on with it.

I think on..? I think we are currently deviated from 'normal' time and we want to stay on abnormal time 4vr..?

I ask because it seems when we're getting sunsets at 9 no one's complaining about DST. It's when we go off DST in the fall we get a bunch of DST is BS rants lol

I'm all for it. Anyone taking their High School aged kids to school is raising a lazy, entitled asshole.

Education after Grade school should be from 8:30am to 5:30pm. with a 1 hour lunch and (2) 15 minute breaks.

Of course kids should be also managing their own commute after 6th grade.

LOL, yes, I am Gen X and we got ourselves to and from school. :laughing

I'm Gen X too. I don't know about you, but I mostly relied on a school bus along with occasional friends with cars. School busses seem to be mostly a thing of the past now.

When I had a kid in high school, sleep problems weren't about start time, rather about the homework load. Way too much. Up past midnight working on homework was common, and there were more all nighters than I ever did at college.

Later start time is arguably a good idea. But they have bigger problems.

Yup! I see this with my high school daughter.

As an AP nerd who was pertt much burnt out by the time I got to UCSC, I agree with you. Educational attitudes towards homework have changed at the grade school and middle school level, my kids had much less of it. I have no data on what it's like in Highschool now.

My daughter is an AP need in high school right now. She puts a heavy load on herself, and picks up more stuff like involvement in clubs. She also did track last season for the first time, which took up a lot of time, in addition to a private martial arts studio. She wants to work, but probably doesn't have time for a part time job. I see her frequently up till (or past) midnight due to her work load, and have to tell her to finally go to bed sometimes.

Now, they will be starting later, but predictably, she signed up for a zero period class, so she won't really be starting later. (Not sure if the zero period is daily or only a couple days a week.) Point is, her school work load is huge.

Everything in the fall, winter, and early spring that was done outdoors was always under lights. Sunset in Pullman, WA in December is around 4PM.

The college rec fields were behind my old apartment in college, it was fun having the lights on and games going on behind us all the time. My roommate used to heckle people from our balcony and I'm surprised we never got our door kicked in. :laughing

I can only speak for schools I know of but zero period is every day.
