So, i've actually done a search and wasn't able to find anything substantial...or maybe i'm just doin it wrong.

Whenever I get on my bike, i'm pretty good about using some sort of earplugs...recently, i've just been buying them in bulk at a local walgreens and throwing them out when I feel i need to change them. But after a while, the cost does add up. I wanted to know if any of you fine gentlemem or ladies knew of a place to get some custom earplugs. The other question i have....which probably should come before my first one, is whether or not the custom plugs are worth the cost.

Questions? Comments? Concern? Dirty Jokes?

Get a legal exhaust and your *$'s trips won't be so loud...

:p

TK's got some custom plugs. Ask him about it

I got mine at the Motorcycle show in San Mateo

$20 dollars or something while you wait

There was a vendor at Laguna this weekend also

Just don't let Rel catch you. He'll write you up!

mp3 player for me since i started riding, changed my headphones once since - extremely cost effective and pleasurable :)

Go to your local Air-gas industrial supply store and pick up a case of 200 pairs of foam earplugs for under $25.00, tax and all. Assuming you reuse them a few times each, that should last you for YEARS.

I prefer the Deci4200 from North Safety Products, and I still have more than half a case left after quite a few years. They feel good all day and provide an excellent seal whether it's the first time you've used them or if they've been used enough times that they're gross enough to finally throw them out. The Deci4200 feels better to me than the Howard Leight earplugs that I used, especially if you try to wear them all day.

I've had the molded earplugs from the San Mateo cycle show, and they didn't cut out enough high frequency noise (e.g. wind noise) to be worth using regularly.

Customs? No...but:

Any Orchard Supply or Home Depot carry cheapo cases of the foam "blocks" for like $10.

Can't go wrong at that price...been using the same block for a couple years....

I got 100 pairs from ebay for $13 shipped...
I use a pair for about 3 days then toss it...

Is it odd that I don't use ear plugs? I feel like it might black out the sound of something important like a car screeching to a stop or an emergency vechicle. However I am half deaf after getting off the highway so maybe I should start wearing ear plugs..

you can still hear just fine, it just basically cuts down on wind noise...

I know quite a few people who ride without earplugs, so you're definitely not alone. Helmet noise at speed over an extended period of time is still a risk for hearing loss though. How much just depends on your helmet noise level and how long your trips are.

Emergency vehicles and the "important" stuff still cut through very well even with earplugs on.

Keep them in a little earplug container when not wearing them, and they'll last longer before you have to throw them out. In your pocket, they pick up lint and dirt and lord knows what else.

I was skeptical about earplugs until I tried them. Now I'm a believer.

My custom plugs drop the noise considerably over foam disposables ( I think they were 50$ ) So with better quality and that they should last for years it's the best option

I can't ride without them. I use the foamies that we are issued at work every week or so. They are great for my usual daily riding. except on longer trips with lots of freeway time. them I go with the ER-6 earphones. They are comfy enough to wear for hours and they work well as regular earplugs when you turn the music off.

After NOT using earplugs for 30 years of my 45+ years of riding...
...I now have 45% hearing loss in one ear & 70% in the other. :(

Some of that was concerts/music, but most of it was from riding. You won't like half deaf, even more as it approaches total deafness...believe me. I don't want to sound like your parents, but please...wear earplugs. Save your hearing....you won't like turning 1 ear toward a conversation, or the TV, or whatever. It sucks....really!

My exhaust is never loud enough to require earplugs-- it's the noise of air wooshing by/into my ear canals that cause the loud noise, so anything that plugs the canal is fine.

I use these: http://www.etymotic.com/ephp/er20.aspx

They are ~$8 a pair on amazon and you can easily rinse and reuse them. Great for concerts too, since they don't distort the sound at all.

Don't worry, you'll be totally deaf soon enough! :twofinger

Earplugs do not prevent you from hearing anything important. They reduce the wind noise and let you hear things better. Eliminating that deafening roar also allows greater concentration (the first thing you do when you're lost is turn down the radio, amirite? :p) and reduces fatigue.

Of course that's all anecdotal...but what isn't anecdotal is that you are causing permanent and cumulative hearing damage without using them.

EDIT: But don't take our word for it...go Google!

I've been using the Hearos. I picked them up at CG.

But, Scott gave me some of these he mentions(the pink ones right?) at one of his lunch rides and they did seem to be much, much better than these Hearos.

I kept for getting where Scott said to purchase them, so I got the others because I was at the shop. I am going to go back to these Deci4200 ones though!

Just buy these, will last you a LONG LONG time (I'm not seller or affiliated)

"These earplugs DO NOT contain Pthalates
which are found in many foams.

Phthalates are suspect carcinogins and have been under
increasing scrutiny for safety in skin contact applications."

# Energized bright yellow color
# Shaped for increased comfort
# One of the softest earplugs available
# Soft, smooth, nonirritating, self-adjusting advanced foam formula
# Excellent attenuation-NRR 33dB
# Laboratory tested NRR 33dB in a NVLAP accredited lab

Just get a little case to carry in your jacket, will last about 4-5 wears each pair -depending on your hygiene.

I bought 400 what seems like years ago (and I'm an every day rider) still have loads left. Walgreens @ $4-7 for a box of 8 pair? Um, no thanks.
