EARPLUGS

I had a pair of the custom ones and thought they were less effective than the throwaway foam ones. YMMV.

yeah, the foam plugs i buy at walgreens work great, but A. its too expensive to buy them in bulk. This problem is fairly easy to overcome. and B. they are a real pain in the ass to put in.
Too expensive and PITA to save your hearing?

ProGuard Custom Motorcycle Earplugs

Description
ProGuard Custom motorcycle Earplugs will keep your hearing safe while you enjoy your love for motorcycling. The earplugs are simple and easy to insert and remove as well as low profile and discrete. ProGuards are a comfortable fit under even the tightest fitting motorcycle helmet. We manufacture your new ProGuards with non-allergenic medical grade soft translucent silicone making them durable, hardwearing as well as comfortable so you can wear them for those long rides without any discomfort.

With our motorcycle earplugs, you can expect to protect your ears from high levels of 'wind noise'. You will still be able to hear ambient noise and communicate easily with our fitted, high quality calibrated tuned attenuating filters. The recommended exposure time for a sound pressure level of 95-100dB (created inside your helmet at 60 mph) is two hours. If you ride faster, your recommended exposure time declines as the noise factor rises. If you rode at 100 mph, the noise factor rises to 100dB making your exposure time less than 15 minutes or the noise factor could lead to tinnitus, deafness and other hearing loss symptoms.

We supply our ProGuards for Motorcycling with two choices of specially tuned acoustic filters as well as a fitting tool so that you can easily interchange the filters for your riding situation. Red is the recommended minimum that provides your ears with a protection factor of 25 dB. You can always replace the acoustic filters if you need new filters or find that you need a different noise reduction. We are happy to assist you with this.

Howard Leight Max individually packed in a 200 box for $24. Best earplugs I've tried on so far.

I go through a box of earplugs in about 4 years. They're great as you can just leave packets of them everywhere. That way you don't have to keep track of em and you'll always have em.

+1 on the Howard Leight. My wife brought some of the disposables home for me. Laser Lite is the model. Absolutely wonderful how they damp out quite a spectrum of noise frequencies and i can reuse them several times.

Yep, those earplugs look exactly like the Westone ones I mentioned earlier in the thread. They are definitely a custom molded deal, not universal fit.

If you do go customs, I would forgo the do it yourself impressions. They aren't hard to do, but it may take a few tries to get it right. The time/money you'll save by visiting an audiologist from get go is well worth it. The marginal extra cost of having a professional make the impressions isn't much, maybe 30-50 extra.

I feel earplugs are essential for anything more than just tootin around town, even if you have a stock exhaust.
Freeway noise is especially more comfortable with them in. If I have to hit the superslab I need them, if I forget I remember why I started to use them in the first place.
I just have some orange generic foam plugs that I should probably replace about now.
The lower noise at freeway speeds helps me focus on what's important, traffic, cars, everything. Plus, they dont' really cut out the critical noises you need to hear: engine revs, emergency vehicles...and others. they cust just enough noise so it's comfortable at speeds....and I only ride a stock 08 ninja 250!

I had never worn earplugs before, but this thread made me try them out. I was worried about not hearing noises that I WANT to hear, but I figure I'd take it from the best (aka. you people) and take your word from it. I ordered a pack of 50 from these guys for less than $10 (as somebody else suggested) and they showed up a few days later: http://stores.shop.ebay.com/EARSOFT-Yellow-Neon-foam-earplugs__W0QQ_armrsZ1

After a week of riding with them, I could never go back to not using them. It didn't take me a week to come to that conclusion either...probably just a few minutes. These particular plugs are really comfy...they're small and really soft, but they expand to fill up my ear perfectly. I can hear everything that I need to hear, but not the "other" stuff that I never really thought about...whistling wind, etc.

I'm a permanent ear plug guy now. Even if it's just a mile to the gym, the extra comfort (and long term safety) is certainly worth the few cents and few seconds.

:thumbup

^^^ getting on a bike without plugs in now and I am like :wtf... the wind noise makes me slow down... seriously... I just did thill and went out 1 session without plugs and went 2 secs slower because of the noise... I thought I was going the same or faster but laptimers do not lie

I'm one of those chuckleheads that has never had A/C in his car. 260 air conditioning all the way. Some days I wear earplugs all day at work, leave them in for the drive home and if my wife is being especially obnoxious, through dinner.

Then she starts snoring and can't sleep without having a fan on.
:wtf

And I've still lost my hearing. It seems I can only hear shit I don't want to hear.
