Ev trucks - 2022+

Batteries on trailers, big trade-off. Batteries big enough to supplement/provide power to vehicle will reduced towing weight of vehicle, plus reduce trailer load capability. Battery tech has a long way to go.

Don't buy an EV if you are constantly towing. Bad idea.

Long distance towing is not a strenth for EV, yet its a corner case. Not a lot of trucks are actually used as trucks. A lot of trucks are purchased for sytle/image to commute with.

The vast majority of trucks sold in the US are "Never/Nevers". Never carry a load, never go offroad.

Dedicated towing : get a 2500 / 3500 / 250 / 350, probably with a diesel.

Everything else : electric trucks start to make a lot more sense, especially as a single-vehicle household.

Least, that's my take on it at the moment. Still won't be buying one for probably 3-5 more years at this point.

FTFY

Love the math some people work out.

Omg it costs another $50 a month to fill my car up! Welp better go out and buy a $70k electric car then. That’ll save on gas.

Because of current events, Tesla orders are rumored to double in certain areas.

Vinyl wrap places love Tesla. Need a wrap to find your car.

Teslas get wrapped because the base paint is usually absolute shit.

That said, I tried cross shopping a few cars. Just to see, The Corolla is fine but I've been looking to replace it for a while now and want to go to an EV.

It's rough right now. Called around looking at the Ford Mach E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kie EV6, VW ID.4, etc, I could not find a dealer that would even quote at MSRP, usually, 5-10k above. It's fucked, so I'm waiting both for more variety and more fair pricing. I'm really not too surprised that Tesla EVs are the ones selling when dealers treat EV customers like money pinatas.

Used Volt maybe? They're solid and last well from my understanding. If you're not set on new I'd bet you could scoop one up for something resembling a reasonable price, they do fine in the snow, plus have the option of hybrid rather than pure EV for longer drives / flexibility to wait out volatile prices or whatever (not sure how your electric providers are up there but PG&E is hiking rates by like another 20%...).

Here's one with 50k miles for $18.2k

Oh, there are some decent options on the used market, but for full EVs or even Plug In Hybrids, there has been a lot of progress in the last few years, and a lot of progress still occurring. The corolla is like a cockroach, it will survive anything and everything, so I'm perfectly happy to keep waiting until the right car at the right price comes along. I like the Ioniq 5, and I kind of like the Mach E and Kia EV6, but certainly not enough to pay well over MSRP for them.
On the Volt specifically, I've driven the Volt and been given rides in a Volt a few times, and I can say very confidently that I would pick my Corolla over a Volt every single time even if both were free. I *really* dislike the interior of that car.

Yep, that is another reason. BMW paint and Paint colors options on a Tesla would be real nice.

On Ford MachE, Ford never planned on building those fast enough in Mexico.

GM and Ford are planning on dipping there toe into EVs on the slow side. They will run into battery supply issues - They will blame it on "supply chain", but they really just had a bad plan.

The same calculation goes the other way:

~"Gas is under $3/gallon? Cool, I will buy that bro-dozer because the oil industry is on a race to the bottom and the price will never go back up"

I've never heard anybody say that. What I have heard is, "When it's time to replace my car, I'm seriously considering an EV for the new one."

In my case, my work truck is way overdue, but it keeps chugging along. When EV truck options actually exist, I'll buy electric rather than another ICE. Until that time, I'll keep pouring gas into my tank.

The largest problem the traditional OEM's have is their dealership network and how EV's affect the income #'s there. I said in a previous post: I doubt we'll see a return to high volume EV's and a shift (back) to higher profit/unit for dealers. The loss of service revenue is a big hit for them (and parts).

I haven't seen any plans for this nor many articles/ strategies aside from longer extrapolations of my comments above masked as actual strategies. It's like they're all ignoring what's coming. Hello home phone numbers.

All in all, this is still a winner. We knew some stuff had to be lost in translation to make it production ready. Like door handles, mirrors, etc. But it still looks good. I’ve always had a soft spot for those old Microbuses with all the windows. This is a very nice modern interpretation of it.
