what's your age and cholesterol level?
are you on medication for it?

im curious since the doc said i have sorta high cholesterol. this was a couple years ago when i was 19. my level then was 240. im now 22 and i was supposed to go back and check last month, but i am not going to go because ignorance is bliss... until i have a heart attack at least.

No idea - I haven't had my lipids checked in a while. But I'm pretty active and eat fairly well (most of the time). My blood pressure, on the other hand, is pretty high (142/88) but it runs in the family and has never been a cause of death.

GO GET CHECKED - high cholesterol can easily be treated these days. Give up a little blood and live longer...

my blood pressure is good. everything is good except the cholesterol. i am an active person. i played soccer and ran cross country in high school. i got my blood checked the summer right after my first year of college at cal poly. i lived in the dorms and ate their fat-filled garbage everyday. i did go the gym almost everyday that year though. but i guess cholesterol is lowered with more of a cardio workout.

currently ive been going to the gym at least twice a week and i rock climb 2 or 3 times a week. but i dont like doing cardio.

cholesterol runs in the family so that's probalby the main factor.

as for your high blood pressure, you better fix that up too. joe montana had high blood pressure and now he's trying to help others out and educate people about it. haha.

Not an MD, but I'd say you are too young for statins. Stay active, cut the fat and you should be just dandy.

A cool way to get your cholesterol checked for free is to donate blood. You'll learn your blood type as well.

I've already seen my doc for it and she's not too worried about it after viewing my family history. I don't have any of the normal hypertension symptoms so she's relucatant to prescribe meds at this point. I'm on top of it....but maybe Joe Montana can help me out. :laughing

i have no freakin' idea.

i've worse probs than cholesteroal, I'm pretty sure. anemic/hypoglycemic, borderline epileptic, moody, cranky, underweight, no muscle tone... shoot, if I didn't ride I'd be a brain in a jar....

Just saw my Dr last week and said my BP was high (135/89), but the nurse told me that was still low. Anywho he put me on medication and when I picked it up from the pharm tech she also told me why im taking this? if you just cut back on salt (sodium) you can lower you BP, then again unless it runs in your family. Go figure!

I'm very competitive. My diet is strategically designed to make sure I get the high score.

I just gave blood and they told me that a Chol. lvl over 200 is HIGH. When my results came back mine was 170. Good for my age I guess. I'm 34 and with my diet and work habbits I know it could be worse.

ZX........

If i'm not mistaken, cardio workouts having nothing to do with lowering your cholesterol. Watching what you eat, does. Don't eat fatty foods.

True! especially shellfish (shrimp, crab). I guess any shellfish that will turn pink. according to my co-worker:laughing

overall was 139 :)

My HDL was a bit low, 40 I think? Still within 'normal' tho.

Got my BP from 140/80 down to 100/50 by lots of cardio. Got my resting pulse from 78 down to 55 at the same time. I'm still a bit fat, however...oh well.

EDIT - Adamsix, your BP isn't 'high' - it's on the very first rung of 'slightly over normal' and that could have been caused by a drink of coffee, bad parking at the docs, running up stairs etc.

As my doc told me, he could have me come back once a month for 4 months, pay the $10 copay and have maybe an invalid reading, or I could go down to Fry's and spend $40 on a BP monitor and try it at home, with no caffeine or beer or stressful driving, and see what it is.

Cardio can do wonders for you BP really easily. But the effect is only as long as you keep doing it...

I had mine checked last year, I think it was about 165. My BP was 132/72 and HR (resting) was 56, I'm 30 and taking no medication. Even though I'm carrying about 45 pounds of extra weight (better than the 120 extra I used to carry), I'm in pretty decent shape.

A Diastolic pressure of 89 is borderline high. With the diastolic being high and the systolic being average, I don't think just cutting the salt intake would do it. It points to a variety of other possible issues though and the doc's recommendation is a good one. Oh, IANAD but I do have some medical training. Most stuff that I've seen points towards a correlation between high diastolic pressure and heart attacks/strokes in young adults. Just something to be aware of.

240 is high for such a youngsta'! quit that freaking mcdonalds crap. at least that was my prognosis years back when the alarm went off. tried to cut everything I loved to eat, butter cheese hamburger fries but opened the door to working out again. fwiw even the eye doctor can tell this history by the lipids in your eyeballs that never go away. no cholesterol meds required though am taking this supplement from costco and try to eat more oats like breakfast cereal.

anyways last year I had a fairly good report if borderline slightly, need to get rechecked again. my BMI is ok but could be better. I've cut 5 lbs. this last quarter and at my old fight weight (but still pudgier dammit)! my bodyfat reads higher than I want but "normal", this home scale says anywhere between 18-20% (wtf!?!!!) and I'd like 5 pts. off that. my water level is low at the moment though I drink plenty usually later in the day and esp. at night. work on my cardio almost every other day sometimes back to back but then ruin it all again by smoking. no one's perfect.

yo tengo quarenta y cinco anos. I am 45 years young! would love some dietary advice uhmeebuh. trying my hardest on my own but still need help. sorry to threadjack but maybe sharing info will help some. hairy you're half my age. my advice is start living healthier now and never stop. that includes getting checkups.

BAM!

i know that diet is the biggest factor here for me. but i am not super unhealthy or anything. rarely do i eat fast food. i do eat normal fatty foods like steak and a lot of dairy. and when there's nothing to eat at all, i will throw a hot pocket into the microwave, but overall i think im active enough to eat some fatty foods. my meals are the normal fatty meals. not the super mcdonald fat diet. my diet can always be better though.

im only a very lean 120lbs. im not sure what my body fat % is, but it's gotta be super low.

great shape! :thumbup you in the same predicament though why the "high" cholesterol levels. that plaque stuff is what can kill us later. then there's that breakdown good vs. bad and all that. not a perfect science? maybe predisposed to a higher level?

i think that's true. cholesterol levels are related only to your diet and genes.

workouts just help strengthen your heart muscles so if your arterial walls are caked up, your heart will still be able to pump.

what sucks for me is that im in good shape physically. i have really high metabolism still and at the same time im trying to gain some weight. so i eat a lot to try to gain weight (doesnt work). not necessarily fat. but just anything. i gotta start choosing better foods i guess. it's time for some barry bonds "flaxseed oil" and "arthritic cream rub".
