Extremely new rider

There are 400 and 500 cc bikes on Marketplace for ~$3000. (My Daughter is scanning posts frequently for a CB300)

I had to renew my license once. I had to take the Car, Moto, Airbrake and Class B written tests. That was a surprise. :rofl

I've reached out to those posts. My issue is that I don't trust salvage titles šŸ™ƒ

I saw a 2016 CB300 for 3.3k yesterday in SF. Owner is responsive on Facebook, might be worth a message

Haha, to answer both of your questions @kawakakana and @civiclx , I think I have an idea, but I'm really unsure, maybe y'all can help give me recommendations.

-I'm interested in a used Ninja 400, but my goodness they seem kinda hard to find. I'm not sure if it's because they discontinued them and they're popular or what, but I can't find any--at least not any that I like (price, color (I know, dumb, but still), seller trustworthiness, etc.

-I saw a Honda CB300, but I'm trying to bring this on the highway, and I don't know if that'll have enough power for me (not that I'm particularly heavy or big, just worried)

-I might just pull the trigger on a Ninja 500 new, but hot damn those dealer fees and freight fees sting. For that matter, idk if the SE is worth the extra money

-CF Moto seems competitive for the same price point, but call be crazy, I don't know much about them, so I don't know if I should get one for my first bike

-I saw a 2003 R6 for $5k that I might consider as well, but idk if that's a good fit for me since it's a bit old+off Facebook marketplace
Congrats on passing.

Even the old R6 is a pretty hard edged street bike. I did not let my son by one when he needed some help with $$$.

A Ninja 500 is solid as is the 400 and the Honda. Keep an eye out and you may find the 400 in the color you want and it is not stupid to want a specific color. SCCA has a DRZ 400 for sale.

Those are solid and also a good bike for a newbie, plus some gentle off road will be available to you.
The have a '24 Ninja 500 too. A couple others that may be of interest too.

They are good folks as well.

Gotcha. I might just go for the 500 then. I'm really trying to be responsible and not just **buy a bike** immediately when I don't have the money at this moment, and oh boy, it's a unique kind of torture. That's why I've been looking at really cheap and old stuff, and justifying it as "it's just to learn on"

I feel the same, a bike is enough work even knowing you're getting it in good condition. Salvage title comes with too many what-ifs and unknowns. Only if it is a dream bike and they're hard to come by would a salvage be worth considering in my book.

It looks like you've got a good range to pick from! I am not a good person to give recommendations, new as I am to all of this as well. I love my CB300 and it's the right fit for me, but it's not the best pick for everyone. I think most people into sports bikes would prefer the appearance and performance of the CBR over the naked CB. If you're looking for a commuter bike, any of those would likely be okay, even the CB300 believe it or not.

Budman and Saxon linked some great choices here on the forum. I guess my one piece of advice from buying cars at least is to not settle, and if you keep coming back to something, you probably really like it. Maybe stay away from super powerful bikes until you have the fine control skills to not crash them into a tree but otherwise, follow your heart so to speak :teeth

Cheap and old stuff may also come with higher risk of repair and maintenance cost, and also higher risk of something going wrong during a ride, so you might end up spending more in the long run on a "cheap" bike. Just a consideration. Bikes save on gas and time in traffic, but honestly they're not much cheaper (and sometimes more expensive even) than owning a car, and more work. Although I agree there is some merit to buying a gently loved moto so you're not too upset if you drop it.

Thanks for the advice!! I'll keep that in mind. Yeah I took a look at the links that were dropped here yesterday, but as you said, I was concerned I was "settling" for a bike. There was a good CFMoto 450SS from Soso cycles, and I considered buying it, but I got scared that I'd be "settling" cus I hate the colors lol (really? Blue black and teal? Not for me, though my girlfriend loves it lol)

I saw a used CBR500 from Moto Java in SF earlier today, and if it's still available in say, a month, I might pull the trigger on it šŸ™‚

Until then, I'll just browse Craigslist, Facebook marketplace, and wait for my license to arrive in the mail.

It's not a requirement, but you're likely to get a little more enjoyment out of something that draws your gaze. I take the long way out of the parking garage in my car just to drive by my bike each day :laughing

Congrats Jared - riding around the Bay Area is great. I was given the advice to not get a bike to learn on but get the bike you want to be riding 6 months from now, and grow into it. In hindsight, I wish I had rented a few different types in the early months instead of buying. Have fun!

Just took it today! I actually needed to take the class C test for some reason, even though my driver's license is still good. That was an unpleasant surprise, but it was fine.
You needed to take the automobile written to align the expiration dates of your class C and M licenses. Take them on the same day, then they expire on the same day.

As an update, just got my first bike!! A 2013 Honda CBR500R. Very happy with it--my girlfriend and I both tried it out and decided that's the bike for us. Thanks all for the advice!
Pictures or it never happened.....

I suggest you ask your DMV question in General to get more eyes on your question.
For me.. the local DMV is in Sunnyvale. For a lot of my stuff I go to Los Gatos because the wait is a lot less.
I made an appointment in SV a few months ago to renew my license and it was still a 40 min wait but I was in and out within an hour.

Not to bad for the DMV.
Were is a DMV in Sunnyvale ? Is this new

I'm sure budman meant the DMV in Santa Clara, 1/3mi outside the Sunnyvale border. :p

That seems likely, either that one or I think there's one in mountain view
