Facebook (lack of) Privacy ? !

.... They might not know who you are, but will be able to tell which websites your online identify has visited.
Well, at least you actually know something. On line identity is simply the remote VPN address in Kansas City. IF I allow cookies, which I do for sites like BARF, then they know something about me. IF I choose to reject all cookies, then good-luck-Chuck. I am just an address that thousands of others are using.

When I feel REALLY paranoid, I will change initial VPN, double log to another VPN, and THEN post about Hillary Clinton.
:rofl

You kind of missing the point. To serve you targeted ads they don't really need to know who you are, just correlate it to stuff you bought or browsed elsewhere. VPN by it self won't help with that.

If you want to be super paranoid you spun up fresh VM, connect to vpn for which you paid with gift card you bought for Cash, connect just to website you want to post whatever. Make the post and kill VM instance.
Also throw in TOR browser for shit and giggles.

There are a bunch of vpn services some are free some are not. Level of service varies.
If one wants they can setup their own vpn.

Anyway. VPN is good for hiding sites you visit from ISP or whatever network you are connecting to.
It also hides your IP from end connection.
Websites can still track your online presence if it's all that one uses. They might not know who you are, but will be able to tell which websites your online identify has visited.
If you turned off cookies, they can't do that. ;)

Unfortunately, cookies are a big convenience on plenty of sites, but you can selectively block cookies on specified sites.

lol nope

vpn have been known to sell the data even though they say they dont.

ill give you the real rundown

vpn is just like bitcoin

its a scam, but yes some people can use the scheme to their advantage, some not

^^^ This.:thumbup

FB sells out and gives your data away, so do all the other businesses people deal with and VPN services do not?:laughing

If the argument is that their businesses wouldn't survive if they did, remember when FB said they didn't and isn't that how they got to billions Zucked?

There is no secret witness protection program for the internet.

Right, and/or installing something like no script and blocking Google analytics scripts, and something like privacy badger from EFF.

Depends on the business model. Not all vpn services are free.

VPN pay services are far from consolidated at this point and there is plenty of real competition, if word got out that one of them was selling data they would be out of business within weeks, it's very easy to dump a VPN service and move to another.

A far, far different business model than FB's or most social media sites whose service is free.

I don't think that they're at a stage where they can afford to be selling data, the downside is too big.

Exactly

But, you told me something different.

If they don't know who you are by a REAL MAC/i.P. address they can't track you, now can they. It's just logical. It doesn't matter if I go to Amazon or elsewhere and buy something. I make the purchase using one address. I then move my VPN to another address and Google away. Google now sees a different person by address. This isn't magic. :laughing

No what I told you is consistent. You just don't seem to understand. Google doesn't use your IP to track you. They use cookies, and java script most websites embedded now. Including this one. The IP is just an extra information for geographical locality.

VPN doesn't prevent them from tracking you through cookies or scripts. For that you either need to disable cookies or use something like no script, which prevents js from running on your machine, and privacy badger from EFF. Which blocks, or attempts to, just the tracking cookies.

My reply to Shnell and what Climber posted address a separate issue of VPN companies selling information on which websites you visit. It's a more limited information because most traffic now days is encrypted. So they don't know what exactly you did on that website, just that you visited.

The Genie left the bottle. Someone will get into anything created and take what they want.

When people started hacking into databases, it was almost like a robin hood thing at first, oh, give them a job, they are so good and we need them on our side.

That worked out so well. From the start, those people should have been going to prison for a very long time. Even so, others were and are willing to do whatever it takes to get data and IMHO as a society we still don't appreciate where this leads.

It leads to the cyborg dolphin and Dolph Lundgren.

Convince people something is free and they will allow you to do almost anything.

Its free, just give up your rights which for most people, cost them nothing so its a win-win.
