Zuck: Yeah so if you ever need info about anyone at Harvard

Zuck: Just ask.

Zuck: I have over 4,000 emails, pictures, addresses, SNS

[Redacted Friend's Name]: What? How'd you manage that one?

Zuck: People just submitted it.

Zuck: I don't know why.

Zuck: They "trust me"

Zuck: Dumb fucks.

Some of us are old enough to remember privacy.
We liked it.

I like it too, hence why I don't use facebook (besides for the messenger app)

If you look in the permissions of any of these apps, they can track your location real time, have access to your pictures, camera, mic, phones data in general.

While Instagram seems less intense, it's extremely advanced and is doing very well... Their time on site algorithm is kick ass (as far as industry standards) and they track and sell your data just as much as fb.

Anything you use "for free", the company is making money off you by selling and or using your personal data. Remember, nothing is for free.

My aversion to smartphones has been rewarded a bit. Also, the fact that FB has been bugging me for my home phone number for years and I just never gave it to 'em. Just because, dammit.

What's interesting are different people's place on the libertarian spectrum. It's inconsistent when it comes to social media to be sure. Myself included..I got too much dopamine or whatever out of FB to opt out completely, even tho' I "knew better."

I guess we all have to periodically remind ourselves to be extremely stingy with personal info, even when you are overwhelmed with the sense that everybody has everything anyway. I have this basically fatalist sense mostly because I spend a fair amount of time online doing genealogy and stuff and you can find everything....mother's maiden name is no longer any secret whatsoever when you can easily look up a living person's birth certi for example....

Well, I never did MySpace, and a Barfette tricked me into joining FB in order to access pictures from a Halloween Event we both attended in like 2009. However, my Facebook Account was created with a false name using an email address I later deleted, so...

Instagram (as well as WhatsApp) is run by Facebook

:hand DO NOT USE.

I don't know what the big uproar is all about... Facebook, instagram, twitter, etc etc etc etc have been selling your info for years, it's their freaking business platform.

Get over it, or get off it.

:laughing - This is so true

.

I did this too. However, the fgt mods detected it and deleted it.

so, for any of y’all that are a) on facebook, or b) surprised by any of this - how was it that you thought facebook was making money? there’s no answer that doesn’t involve some level of leveraging your personal information. which by definition implies recording, tracking - and selling it. they have no other tangible product. if anybody actually thought about it for a nanosecond, that would be obvious to them.

Still true.

I did the download to see what info they have. It was a lot. One friend's phone number who is not on any social media at all. So even if you are not on FB but have a friend who is and they have some of your information on their phone FB has it. I have opted out of the platform, but like closing the barn door after the cows are out. :(

Anyone surprised by this is either ignorant, stupid, or both.

Again, love the derision for the victims.

HA HA YOU'RE STUPID FOR BEING TRUSTING AND THINKING IT WOULDN'T BE QUITE THIS BAD, THAT THEY WOULDN'T GO QUITE THIS FAR YOU SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THEY'D LIE AND CHEAT AND STEAL.
:love

Doubt anyone knew they'd troll so far down the line to tie you to everything they can, even off-line friends and listening to your conversations.

Click on a link to see some used cars and then see used car ads all over my fb feed? Ok, I'm cool with you taking that info.

Reading my texts and targeting me with specific advertising? No, I didn't expect that.

TOO BAD YOU SHOULD HAVE KNOWN, YOU'RE STUPID.

The one that creeps me out is when you have an in person conversation with somebody, not on the phone in any way, and then you start seeing related ads.

Yep, but everyone should have assumed malevolence from the start and taken precautions against the onslaught of technology that no one knew was coming.

Talked about chainsaws with someone irl and my feed was full of 'em for a few days.

that

I've never signed up for myspace or fb and I've been using a company phone only for over a decade. Yet I still get very targeted ads anytime I go online. Damn you google for trying to sell me jackets and boots damn you to hell :mad

Isn't is so nice to know that all the fools who jumped into FB sold out all their relationships just to satisfy their own egos.

The last friend you need is one who is on facebook.

There is no way out of this mess. Just where do you think all the billions came from, some product FB made? You were the product, FB was selling you.

Instagram and the others? It is so funny to hear the justifications that they aren't doing the same thing. Oh really?

Lesson learned but being targeted by ads for things you might be interested in buying isn't the worst horror you could possibly experience in life.

You really think the whole "You are the product" thing is news?

Most people knew that for years. Facebook is a business --- they knew that. Facebook delivers targeted advertising --- they knew that. And isn't a big deal at all. What happened last week is something totally different.

agreed but that's not what this is about here. getting to call people fools to make themselves feel better is what's going on now.
