Facebook (lack of) Privacy ? !

so I requested my history. I didn't see anything with my phone number or text messages in it. saw my messenger messages. The thing that bothered me was "Advertisers with your contact info." There is a list of about 30, and most of them there is no way I personally gave them permission.

Data is Money.
I've been saying this for years, it is the whole purpose of creating these 'free' sites.
Who here throws out anything that has value, especially when they have plenty of storage space to keep it?

Things are getting real for FB....

The Latest: Germany plans stricter controls on Facebook
The Federal Trade Commission is investigating Facebook's privacy practices following a week of privacy scandals including whether the company engaged in "unfair acts" that cause "substantial injury" to consumers.

Facebook's stock, which already took a big hit last week, plunged as a result.

Facebook said in a statement on Monday that the company remains "strongly committed" to protecting people's information and that it welcomes the opportunity to answer the FTC's questions.

News outlets have reported on the FTC investigation last week, but the FTC hadn't confirmed it until Monday. Facebook reached a settlement with the FTC in 2011 offering privacy assurances.
They just thought that it was all about making piles of money and counting it without any consideration given to responsibility....

I hope they get nailed big-time, sick of big corporations and their execs just taking the money and going on their merry way.

Probably the biggest reason they are facing this is because they haven't bee Pro Trump.

IF you use android (facef*ck must have deal with apple) you've been hosed, to better serve your needs of course. At facebook, we take all your data, on all your devices, because we know you'd want us to, so that you're life can be spent on more fun things like sharing a picture of your lunch with your 10 followers.

So, how many years have I been coming on here laughing at people talking about, "Holy Shit, you put Social Media on your phone? :laughing

no apps, all mobile sites.

+1

Website browser usage doesn't allow it to get much data outside of what you use in the window.

Big data has profiled my comments/likes but at least I didn't install the app and give it permissions to Hoover up anything and everything on my phone.

Yeah, sure, that must be the reason. No doubt the EU has it in for them for that very reason.:rolleyes

Whatever the reason they are facing it.. is good.

The amount of info being gathered and shared is nuts.
Saw a news clip where a guy had his phone on airplane mode and traveled the city. As soon as he turned in on the data on where he had been and exactly at what time was transferred to Google. They had set up an interceptor to gather it as it went by. This was with no sim card too.

I am not texting anyone ever again...:laughing

I wonder how many people who see the traffic information in google maps never stop to wonder where that data is coming from....

I’ve seen red on the map, in remote areas, from one vehicle stopped on the shoulder. :laughing

Average speed zero. It goes yellow after I drive through. It’s one thing to know that they have this level of data collection, still unnerving to see it in real-time.

Yup. I'd guess that they may be retaining every move you make though that would take a shitload of storage space, they probably optimize by retaining only the changed location data points along with timestamps and duration.
Big Brother truly is watching you.....

I wonder if at some future date they'll offer to sell all of the locations that a person has been to (including massage parlors), for a price, or conversely sell the ability to have your location data deleted, for a price.

My aversion to smartphones has been rewarded a bit. Also, the fact that FB has been bugging me for my home phone number for years and I just never gave it to 'em. Just because, dammit.

What's interesting are different people's place on the libertarian spectrum. It's inconsistent when it comes to social media to be sure. Myself included..I got too much dopamine or whatever out of FB to opt out completely, even tho' I "knew better."

I guess we all have to periodically remind ourselves to be extremely stingy with personal info, even when you are overwhelmed with the sense that everybody has everything anyway. I have this basically fatalist sense mostly because I spend a fair amount of time online doing genealogy and stuff and you can find everything....mother's maiden name is no longer any secret whatsoever when you can easily look up a living person's birth certi for example....

I don't know what the big uproar is all about... Facebook, instagram, twitter, etc etc etc etc have been selling your info for years, it's their freaking business platform.

Get over it, or get off it.

I moved my pic posting activities to Instagram.

Not a perfect world but it seems like there's fewer data points can they collect/sell and near zero political crap.

Since Instagram is really just photos what can they collect; Face recognition in the pics, GPS locations of the pics, followers/following, comments. Anything else?

FB had many more nefarious data info points to push and collect responses; FB had FaceID/tagging, polling, paid/political/research crap in the news/pic feed, advertising/sales, GPS history, siphoned off contact lists, siphoned off text message history, siphoned off call history, etc.

Please stop with the political innuendo.

Freeryde
Some of us are old enough to remember privacy.
We liked it.

Read my lips.

Trust me.
