First bike for my toddler

One more vote for a PW50 as a great starter bike. You can limit the power on them when the kid is first starting out by restricting how far they can turn the throttle.

Take him somewhere like the kid's track at Carnegie and you probably don't even have to worry about using the brakes as someone else mentioned. The first couple of times out the kid will be happy just to be riding it around. Little by little he'll want to get out a bit further and have more power. You'll know when he's ready to move up to something bigger and faster.

I think the PW50 is one of the few bikes I wish I had never sold. The person I sold it to was a total idiot with no clue at all how to take care of it. I could have easily kept it in the corner of my garage to let grandkids ride.

I got my 5-yr old (a bit shorter than yours) an Oset 12.5 electric trials bike. Super light and easy to ride, adjustable power and top speed - from walking speed up to 15mph/600W, flick of a switch on/off, and because it's electric we ride it around the neighborhood, up the local bike trails, wherever and no one cares. Best thing for learning to ride is seat time, and electric = way more seat time.

+1,000. I've watched her ride it and she loves it. It is the perfect bike to get a small one on to learn to ride.

Sounds like everyone that's had an oset or a pw50 has been happy with their decision. I guess if nothing else the ttr50 is off the table :laughing . I got some thinking to do...

Appreciate all the input fellas

Get the motorized part down first.
Starting stopping make some sort of trainng course, or regimens.
When they master that flip over to the geared 50cc moto.
Whammy wishes he had that option when I was a little wheeler.

ttr50 is GREAT if you get the one with electric start. Constant kicking a bike over when you're learning can suck when learning.

Oh and around 7 years old (as low as 5, talent cup starts at 10)

id vote the pw. the honda is pretty heavy. i brought my kid over to the dealership and i put the bike on its side. (not on the ground i was holding it up) and had my kid try and pick it up without help. he could barely and i mean barely do it but not quite.... plus you can pick a pw up for under 900$

Does it have a clutch and shifter or something? The PW50 is automatic and it's rare to kill the engine. And kicking it is easy anyway. The one I had was clocked with a top speed of 27 mph.

My brother and I started on a Honda 50 with three gears straight down at 5 then moved to a clutch so my experience would be pw50 for what it is worth.......

IIRC, the TTR50 is also a 3spd auto. so I don't see whats stopping any small kid from riding it.

I started on Honda Z50 when I was 4.5yrs. it was probably heavier than the TTR. the parents would just put it in 2nd gear and let me go. I learned how to brake real quick after hitting that first tree.

You can buy actual seats that go on the oset, I plan to go this route hopefully this year

k guys did some measuring of his current bicycle and if the 12.5 isn't already too small it will be tomorrow.

So it's down to the 16.0 or the mx10
dimensions are similar but they have some subtle differences and some not so subtle (price)

my biggest concern was the battery replacement cost, salesman i spoke to said the mx10 is about $1000 to replace and the 16.0 is about $150. Problem is the 16.0 uses 3 batteries, the mx10 uses 1. Salesman "sold" me on the mx10, but i'd expect a salesman to recommend the more expensive bike.

Anyone have any experience with both bikes? Thoughts?
