first bike

Hi I'm pretty new to the forums. I've been looking at the Moto page for sales and craigslist for sales too. I've been looking for a suzuki gsxr600 2000 and up for awhile now. Just turned 21 2months ago and had my M1 for almost 1 year. I completed the motorcycle training course and the instructor suggested i get a sports bike becuase practicing the turns during the course, I lean a lot and skid the pegs of a crusier bike i was on. I'm sitll a student and trying to find a salvaged title something arround 3500. any tips for me? I've seen a lot post saying start on a 250 or get a really old motorcycle, but i want a something i can take from San Francisco to San Diego. I'm 165lbs., 5'8"-5'9"

Having done that trip on a 600cc sport bike I would not recommend doing that on any sport bike of any year. If you're determined to do it, I would recommend a larger, full fairing model, dare I say a CBR1100xx Blackbird or ZX-12. These bikes are much too big, heavy and powerful for your age, size and expertise, but some people are determined to do things the wrong way- just ask my wife. I think that if you're going to be "commuting" to San Diego more than one trip a year, Look for a Kawasaki Concours or Honda VFR750-800. Either of these are plenty sporty and are comfortable for long distances, even with a passenger. They also have high resale and it is not uncommon for people to buy one of these, ride it during the summer, and sell it for what they paid for it. You should be able to find one of these for $3500-4000 without any problem. Then if you still want a sport bike you will have the money to do it with- just understand that riding a sport bike for long
distances (200+ miles per day) is not fun.

The only reason I would have to do the 500+ miles trip to SanDiego is becuase i would be transferring there for school. I'll be in the city for another year so I think by the time I transfer i'll have enough riding experience. A bigger bike? I dont know if i would be able to handle it too quick, but im willing to start on a 600. Thanks for the help though. Still think I should look into 600+cc bike?

Hi there, just bought my first bike it's an '08 Suzuki SV650. Any must-know tips for a noob to stay safe? (something they didn't teach me at MSF)

Yeah, that bike has lots of torque at low rpm and will tend to lift the front wheel, esp at slower (below 50mph) speeds. If you're canyon riding or on Hwy 1, etc. and you do lift the front hard on the gas coming out of a corner, the front wheel will tend to slow down. As you bring the front down, until it the front wheel matches the rear wheel's speed, the bike will tend to buck and give you a tank slapper. To avoid this you will need to relax your arms and let the bike do all the work, get yourself closer to the tank, and again relax- don't panic. The bike weighs much more than you do, so don't try to muscle it around- it's gonna win.

dont know how tall you are or how much you weigh but there were a couple of FZR 400's and CBR 400's. if you look around you should be able to get a cbr 600 if you the 400's to small for you.

Hello.. I got my first bike couple months ago a gsxr 600

very fun. I'm liking the forums

First Bike

I know someone with 06 SV 650 for sale. I don't know what he wants but I do know he only has $200.00 into including purchase price. Yes it's been wrecked but no frame damage. He's turned into a street fighter. If I was looking for a first bike this would be it. The SV650 is not an inline 4 but a twin v. Great low and middle range power great for learning. The inline 4 sport bikes are hard to learn on for many reasons but the biggest is safty. My 01 gixxer with little modifications hits 70 before red line in first gear. A great way to get over your head real fast. If your interested drop me a line and I'll put you in cointact if he still has the bike.

Hi, my name is Daniel and I live in Sonora, CA. I do go down to the Bay Area a lot though.
I'm looking for my first bike now. I'm not too worried about gas mileage in one but I do really like the sport bike look and really like 2001+ honda cbr600f4i and the yamaha r6's with the dual headlights. I've come from dirtbiking, snowmobiling and rallying, now i'm looking for something fun to tool around on, especially ever since my manager has been telling me about his days riding his r1 around.
I'm looking to spend $3000-$4000 for a mechanically sound bike...not too worried about the plastics. lol
but my problem is i'm having the hardest time finding a bike! can someone please help me find one?

First Bike

My first (and now also second bike since the first one was hit by a car) is a 2006 Honda CBR600RR. I know it's a lot of bike, and I honestly wouldn't recommend it to many people as a first bike. I do love how it handles, I love it's power, and it definitely helps my confidence in the sweepers with the way it sticks. My two biggest qualms with it are the two that are pushing me towards selling it soon: it doesn't do well at all on really tight turns (as in city driving, parking, parking lots, and steep canyon roads) and it doesn't do well for distance (the riding position is uncomfortable, ESPECIALLY on my wrists). So at this point, screw looking cool on a sportbike, as fun as it is. I am considering the Kawi z1000. More upright position, still has lots of power.

Z1k is a nice moto for sure. The CBR can be more comfy maybe try to edit your positioning some?

Newbie too

Hello there! My name is Buzzing Bee and my bike's name is Bumble Bee. We'vebeen riding together here in Riverside CA. for about 2 months now and so far no accidents. By profession, I'm working as a nurse here in my city and into airsoft when not into riding. Hope I can learn important things from you guys when it comes to riding.

EX250

I have an EX250. Bought it 1.5 year ago used. Lowsided it once (part of statistics).

Since my memory is fresh...

I think higher cc bikes are not good for beginers because the beginers often lack smooth troffle control and thus what on 250 cc is a mild jerk on 600+ cc (most of which are FIed) is major upset of an already frigile balance of a rider.
They're heavier and tend to induce out-of-control perception on a rider that logically results in the death grip and actual lost of control.
New riders tend to do more body steering (a newbie version) and less counter steering and on bigger bikes your body/bike mass ratio does not really favor that. It is that feeling when you want to go steeper into a turn but bike does not. Remember? )).

Despite that I thought I would upgrade the bike I have no plans to upgrade to a bigger bike. Actually nobody could reason me why I should change the bike. Common arguments are:

1. you can't start fast from a traffic light. My understanding of this argument is that you've got to learn to upshift fast and smooth. There are few cars that can outpace EX250 and even fewer drivers capable of that and those who are capable usually don't do that.
2. Lack of torque at freeway speeds. My understanding of this argument is that you've got to learn to downshift fast and smooth at freeway speed. It goes on 5th well over legal speed limits and still below the red line. But again if you can't do it then you're not ready for the riding style that requires this skill.
3. Lack of power on twisties. Well Gary somehow manages it - probably by mastering 1. and 2.

There is a small drawback on EX250 (prior 08 models) - low clearance for track days (thought if you're on the track then you're not exactly newbie), but again if metal scrapes a public road either you're going too fast or your riding skills need an upgrade or both. Though front fork spring upgrade is a good thing for heavier and/or more experienced riders.

Has anyone tried the Batpod as a beginner bike? Batman was clearly a beginner on bike with his heavy restrictive helmet and CE-approved Batsuit.

I saw on the History Channel some shows that talk about the tech behind the Batman character/movies and the batcar/assault vehicle that becomes the batpod/batbike has electric motors in each wheel (supposedly like 700hp/per!!!) I think if they can ever have numbers like that then there will be a shift from gas to electric bikes....

hit and run on my r6

I was riding down international and 85th ave, on tuesday, sept. 16 at around 12:30ish when this ford minivan hits me with side of his car, i was on the right lane when i laid my bike down, i believe this guy purposely hit me, as he sped away, he was speeding right behind, running the red light, he was in the left lane, fearing that i would be rear ended, i switch over to the right, he switches to the right and bam!!! I fall at about 45mph or so, I am suffering from minor injuries, but i would really like this fucking guy caught. Please, if anyone could help.
