Foods you don't like and changing your tastebuds

As a kid I hated olives, mushrooms, asparagus, beets, seafood, maybe a few other things. Now the only thing I still hate is asparagus. I try it from time to time just to see if anything's changed. Never does. Pretty sure that shit wasn't meant for human consumption :laughing

I've had gator. It was like rubbery white meat/chicken with a hint of that damn seafood stank taste I was talking about. :p

Same. Had in east Texas about 6mo ago. Reminded me quite of bit of cheap calamari. I bet fresh meat and breaded/cooked at home is quite a bit better.

If you like eggs benedict, try it with some hollandaise.

Durian, just can't handle it even if I avoid the smell. It's something that needs to be appreciated at a very early age.

I never thought I would like escargot, but I love 'em with garlic butter.

Peru has a lot more to offer than guinea pigs, to rule out an entire culture's food because of an animal they eat is a bit extreme. There's parts of America where they eat racoons, chitlins, gators, etc.

don't get wrapped around the axle. love peruvian food (except for rodents lol). am just giving our boy a little bit of shit. :laughing

Ahh got it. Yeah it was one of these moments :laughing

I love fish but once its eaten I almost puke at the smell of its dirty dishes and leftovers.
Raw salmon is delicious

I'm not sure even hollandaise can cover up that green flavor :laughing

See, I actually really liked durian, especially the dried chips. And it definitely needs to be smelled to be appreciated. I couldn't believe it was the same thing as those piles of melons in the street market that smelled like rotting animal carcasses in a noonday sun. Unbelievable how bad it smells. The first guy to try it must've been one hungry mofo.

great point. one of the awesome things about raw fish, is that it is frequently much less pungent and off-putting as it becomes when cooked.

As long as its cooked correctly and not some chemical creation, there is almost nothing I dont like. I'm scared of durian (see above) never tried it. I have seen a lot of things on Bizarre Foods that I would not eat or probably like but it has to do with either rawness, or putridness. I saw Zimmern eat a raw pig testicle. No hway. I did however have a very rare slice of prime rib today at company luncheon that was so frickin delicious that its near rawness just seemed like a "feature."

I'm ambivalent about eggplant. Never can get used to its flavor.

Yes, I'm fat for a reason. I love squid ink pasta whatever. The one time I had it anyway, it was delicious. Love all curries and masalas, Indian, Thai, whatever style. Love goat meat, in curry or in birria. Love all the seafood. Love oysters out of the shell. Mmm. I passed beyond that stank aspect waz talked about and accept it. I mean, as long as its not because its old. I love gator sausage but it has pork in it for the fat so its not like just eating gator. I had a bear roast once, it was delicious and earthy.

Mmmm. Food.

Sounds like the eastern European versions of Vegemite :laughing

Interesting, until now that I looked it up, I always thought vegemite was like gem. Spread made out of sweet fruit.
Judging by the description is quite the opposite. :barf
I actually looked up the zacusca ingredients and its mainly, onions, red bell pepper and bbq-ued egg plant fried independently and then together with salt and pepper ["vinete" is basically just bbq-ued, peeled and chopped eggplant fried in oil with some condiments.]

I've never really had to 'get over' a food, but I've grown to hate one. Bell peppers. They get tossed into everything because The Color! I've grown to absolutely loathe them. The flavor overpowers everything else, but it's okay, because The Color! Feh!!!!!! :thumbdown

one day i got curious, and ate it - looked at him and said 'you motherfucker'. :laughing

:rofl

Where? I've seriously never had good Peruvian food:(

Peruvians, make the best ceviche. Hands down. Sea bass, touch of hot pepper, and with a nice yam in the center. Simple, tasty, best. :x

The only things I refuse to eat regardless of how it's prepared are olives, bell peppers, and raisins. I'll pretty much eat everything else, even fruits and veggies that I dislike, as long as it's prepared well.

Olives, bell peppers and raisins?? You cracee mang. We've got a couple blueberry bushes and one of my favorite treats is to go eat the shriveled up ones that the birds refuse to eat. Should be able to sort out the other two with pizza I'd think.

i'm with him on bell peppers (most often too bitter) and raisins (too many sticks in them), but olives - WTF?!?!?

I tried, I really did try to give them all a chance, but no matter how it's prepared, just the taste of them makes me cringe. I'll eat pretty much anything else, any animal, any body part of the animal, even balut, whatever. But those three things I can't handle.

If you find them too bitter, try an orange or yellow, they're a little sweeter.

Balut...I consider myself a pretty adventurous eater, but I'd definitely struggle to take a nibble.

yeah - this is true when they are fresh and prepared properly - too often not the case though, so i just don't risk it. on another note - someone mentioned pizza - and it is beyond me why chefs feel compelled to be so liberal with the bell peppers on pizza (cheap and easy?). i feel like a fucking surgeon methodically removing them before i can eat it.

Only thing I dislike and can't ever get used to eating is liver and chicken heart.
