Frank Sommerville

Sad news for all the Frank Somerville fans out there. He was arrested by PD on suspicion of criminal threats, battery, public intoxication, and a violation of his probation stemming from a DUI conviction in Oakland on 12-30-'21.

Berkeley PD made the arrest on Monday night at a home of a relative near the Berkeley Hills on Indian Rock Ave.

That thud is the sound of Rock Bottom.

For goodness sake. I feel sorry for his family, especially his father whom the article mentions. If Somerville is 65 his dad has to be in his 80’s.
If Somerville can’t stop drinking for himself he should stop for his dad.

On his prior interview the fact that he didn't understand alcoholism or sobriety was glaringly obvious. Sadly I believe he now has absolutely no chance of returning as an anchor.

Frank when he realizes he'll never work in this town again...

Sounds like he's gotten super sober

Imagine how long the argument/altercation lasted before his own brother had no other choice but to call the police?

Assuming there is some brotherly love between the two it must have gone on quite a while before he ran out of options and patience.
Really sad.

Want to bet he doesn't have any real world consequences like you know, prison?

Because he's a white rich celebrity.

I doubt he’s rich. Local tv and radio people often don’t earn what we think because we are misled by their ubiquitousness.

He’s probably gonna have to move somewhere else and get some menial job after whatever legal penalty he faces.

Snarkasm noted. I am just reflecting what I think about this situation. I doubt he’s rich unless he made wise investments.

If anything, I have always felt that both actors and news types are exalted beyond reason. News readers have the peculiar talent of being in an unnatural situation and seeming comfortable whilst doing it. It’s definitely got some degree of beauty pageant based on who ends up in which markets. When I travel, I love to tune in and see who is reading the news. When we were in Maui last month, I was amused to see that Rick Quan is reading there, now. He was on Channel 5 I think here for years.

It’s a talent, but so is teaching, medicine and other occupations, some of which are underpaid, imo, and reflect misaligned values in our capitalist system. And not even to mention Patti Poppe and her $51 million a year for being CEO of the felonious PGE.

Great post!!!! I agree 100%!!!

Not to defend ceo salaries or Patti Poppe. But she actually only made 1.3 million in salary. The rest was stuck, which quite frankly is pretty worthless.

I only read today's posts about Frank Somerville.

I met him when he attended the funeral of Scott Lunger, a murdered Hayward cop. He wasn't there to film a piece, he was just on his break between 6 and 10 to pay his respects.

Maybe a newscaster is just a good looking script reader, but I wasn't impressed with Tori Campbell's lame apology for the stupid racist Asiana pilot names. In a later newscast, Somerville apologized for her and the news department's mistake, and took responsibility for their station.

The flipside is the misunderstanding about addiction and what Somerville is doing. Of course, it is incredibly embarrassing for a celebrity to be arrested, and I hate how he is still driving drunk, especially when you live in transit-heavy Oakland.

But that is exactly what addiction does to you: you make the absolute wrong choices and you are unable to control yourself. When he had his first on-air problem, I'm guessing KTVU told him to go to rehab because of previous off-air issues. The second on-air problem got him fired.

You'd have to be blind not to recognize he was still drinking when he interviewed with KRON a few months ago. He described his very lonely life, which seems unfathomable for one of the most popular people in the Bay Area. But his family won't tolerate his alcoholic abuses, nor should they.

I still respect the man that Frank Somerville used to be, and actually I would probably enjoy being around him even now, as long as I could tolerate his alcoholic behavior (It sounds like he threatened his father as well punched out his brother). I was oddly disappointed with John Mulaney's recent comedy show, where he described a very quick rehab process, which is usually not the case. For most addicts, it isn't like "Oh I have a problem, see you in 28 days when I'm sober."

Not intended as snark...but the anchor in his life is the one he’s tied around his own neck. I hope he finds a path to sobriety - right now it sure seems like he’s in a spiral and while I do not know him personally he always seemed like a decent guy and I wish him and his family luck getting to a better place.

When Ralph Barbieri was alive, as a radio guy on KNBR, he was making $300,000/year during his final years of his contract before...in 2011.

Frank's average salary was $615,000 per year for being an anchor with KTVU after being there for so many years (31-years). Yeah, it's not "fuck you" monies but with good investment choices and such, he's probably not hurting. But, you know, fucking lawyers fees, am I right?!
