FZ-09 vs. FZ-07

One of the things that I do not like about my FZ (which is an easy fix) is the throttle mapping and engine braking. It has a pretty harsh throttle response if you're not used to it and has very strong engine braking. An ECU flash or dyno tune can fix the throttle map and a $30 Graves block-off plate fixes the engine braking.

An ECU flash will address the throttle response and will remove the engine breaking. The flash will also disable the AIS, which is what the Graves block-off plates do. You disable the AIS to eliminate the decel popping if you have an aftermarket exhaust.

You can also have the ECU flash remove the speed limiter on the bike as well as lower the temp when the fan kicks on.

Definitely. When you first crack the throttle, it's like going from 0% to 20% instantly. After that it's smooth, but that first little bit takes a gentle hand.

Mine pops even with the stock exhaust

Lots of useful info here so i don't mind bumping, plus search is useless.

How are the 07 and the 09 with passenger? She's < 100 lbs

Unless you are also around 100lbs I would plan to work the suspension, pop a zx10 shock in there for $60 or spend $1000 on a penske double clicker at least.

+1 on the shock upgrade on either bikes. I have a 9 but my buddy has a 7 that I ride all the time. Same thing applies, soft suspension.

I ride two up on an 09 with my wife fairly frequently. Stock suspension (set up as firm as possible) with a seat concepts seat and we're comfortable for up to 6 hours or so of saddle time. About 275 lbs total for the both of us with gear and luggage.

While it is certainly possible to ride two-up with luggage, the low hanging oil drain bolt is susceptible to being hit as it is the lowest part of the bike (good job yamaha) going over a modest bump.

See Joe's experience about just that here

^They fixed that issue for 2016 models and you can get a skidplate if you want for it (though that shouldn't have been an issue in the first place).

I remember seeing Joe's post about that, definitely a bummer.

I've done about 5,000 mile two up, 12,000 miles solo (saddle bags, tail bag, top case, etc) on the 09 and haven't had a close call with the drain bolt scrapping. Even survived the dips on Redwood Rd countless times. Obviously, other's experiences may vary.

Oh man, skid plate definitely, that didn't look like too terrible of a bump in the road.

Maybe i'll look at the '16 before i post my R6 for sale.

This guy was fine though.

I've ridden both. The 07 is far more fun in my opinion.

The 09 ridden even at a mild pace is going to get you in trouble.

Hey FreeRyde...old thread, but I thought it's funny after reading your input...I found out he bought a FZ10 like mine. They are so much more docile than the 09...ha ha. It will good to meet up with him and do some rides up to the Junction.

See you next spring barfer's. :thumbup:afm199

Oh just read his post. I got confused with the SPEED triple r. I'm sure the Street triple R is a great bike overall, but I really like the powerband on the FZ-09. I've never ridden a street triple r and I'm sure the suspension is good, but I know it can't touch the FZ in terms of power.

Like I said though, for a little bit of upgrades you can make the FZ a track bike with no issues. I plan on spending about $1500 on suspension upgrades on mine. Not gonna track it or anything, but definitely ride a lot more spirited.

In terms of power, according to some quick google searches, they're roughly both around 115ish hp. havent peeked at torque figures, but theyre both triples. probably a couple less than the FZ's, thanks to displacement.

675cc vs 900cc, i dont see 200cc+ more power in the FZ.

the STR is a better bike. but you pay for it.

but just find a deal. i bought mine with 16 miles, on it for 8 flat. brand spankin awesomeness
