Get Fit, Stay Fit, Feel Good - 2026

First half 2026
lose additional 20 by June
continue strength training 4-5x week
able to do at least 3 pull-ups
get shots for knees to increase stability and cushion the bone on bone to prepare for running

Second half
return to tri training: swimming, easy 3 mile runs with minimal knee pain/damage, road bike instead of gravel
back to sprint tri

I really need to get off my butt. I have a high stress job, where I spend 50% of my time in my office (or teaching classes) and 50% of my time doing physical work. I am fried when I get home from work. All I want to do is make myself a drink and hang out with my dogs. I'm about 25 lbs overweight and I don't bike / backpack / lift weights like I used to do. I have EVERYTHING at home and I just need to use it. I do hike with my dogs on the weekends, but my weekdays are not put to good use.

@Bzwrthy
I would consider not running if you need shots to do so. More swimming and cycling perhaps?

2 cents from a knee replacement guy who did aerobics with bone on bone that just wore my shit out.

I feel this so much :zzz Work is really an energy drain for me such that I find it hard to be personally productive towards any goals once I'm home.

I end up hitting something fun on the way home from work, like the climbing gym, so that I don't fall into the trap of "I'm home, time to be comfortable" and I'm not tempted to skip. Weekends I sometimes take my parents for walk at the park by their house and that's fun too. Make your doggies your accountability partners, they'll love it if they are the active kind.

Also, I can usually trick myself into feeling committed to my plans by putting it on my calendar. "well, it's on the calendar, so I have to go:dunno"

I feel you on the fish thing that is why I try to restrict my sushi intake otherwise I would turn into a salmon. Although I am not sure about the canned tuna I have heard the brighter the meat the more heavy metals so salmon and ahi tuna are pretty bad but then again the white tuna is also a predator fish so probably in the same ballpark so it was just an old wives tale about the color.
Ya it’s ez to find exceptions to any of the rules of thumb. And since we rarely know exactly where the fish came from, who knows. I try to limit cans of tuna to 1-2 per week. So it’s not THAT useful as a staple protein for me.

CA has some advisories on local fish

One idea is to study the habits of elderly Asians.
Eat a plant based diet with meat as a flavoring, not the main course.
Eat fresh whole foods , no processed junk.
Daily low impact exercise like Tai Chi or walking.
Drink green tea and water, no alcohol or soda.
No dairy and no sugary desserts.
And for goodness sake be consistent.

still cheese’s bitch

I may or may not have been seen eating a random chunk fresh from whole foods while driving home. If it never makes it to the fridge, it never happened.

I switched to the kirkland protein as it is whey based and the price per serving is about the cheapest I have found. I usually supplement with pure protein bars when they go on sale.
I'm pretty sure it's the Gold Standard that they also carry, the taste is the same.

My goal is pretty simple, keep my boozing down to ~2 days a week. Add strength training into my two miles of brisk walking daily. Trickiest part will be to find a gym nearby that I can afford so I can get there and back with time to get fed / ready for work in the afternoon. Gyms in SF around me are kinda spendy.

Poor health costs way more than a gym membership.

I hate working out in the rain. For Christmas my wife got me a Van Rysel D100 trainer. It came with Zwift cog and click so I could keep riding. In all honesty I’m sure she got tired of my complaining. Anyway I’ve done 5 rides on it. Four of them have been structured workouts. It’s been very enjoyable. It will be interesting to see what my fitness will be like on my next outside ride, if it ever stops raining up here.
