Glory Hole Watch 2024: By the Numbers
by Peter Kilkus

But what are the numbers?: Lake area, lake level, lake depth, lake volume, lake input, lake output, lake evaporation. Some are big numbers, some are small numbers, and some are tiny numbers. These numbers all interact to produce a final result.

The following report was sent to the Lake Berryessa News by Jay Cuetera, Supervising Water Resources Engineer, Solano County Water Agency. It is meant to explain some of the issues regarding the quickly changing status of the Glory Hole Watch. But things changed since his original report on Friday. (Note: The elevation hit 439.94 feet, but needs to be at 439.95 feet for an official spill, according to Jay Cuetara, Solano County Water Agency. But after this was written, the hourly figure from the primary measuring station recorded 439.96' on 4/5/24 at 4 PM; 439.97' on 4/5/24 at 11 PM; and 439.97' again on 4/6/24.) These fluctuations seem to meet the "officially spilling" requirements. Although a final statement has not been released by SCWA it does appear that Glory Hole has officially spilled. We'll wait to hear from the Solano County Water Agency for the final word.

4/6/24 4:00 am 439.92
4/6/24 5:00 am 439.92
4/6/24 6:00 am 439.95
4/6/24 7:00 am 439.95
4/6/24 8:00 am 439.95
4/6/24 9:00 am 439.97

Here's a video just taken from inside Glory Hole. Although it appears that water is flowing when you look at the top of the spillway, there is actually so little water going down the SCWA can't measure it in any way. As jay says in the article below, "Even though this is water “spilling” into the spillway, the volume of water going over the lip is so small that it is unmeasurable. Since it is not at a level that can be calculated it is therefore not considered officially spilling."

Breaking Lake Berryessa News! (April 1, 2024)

Solano County Water Agency (SCWA) to make deal on April 1st for the Los Angeles County Waterworks Districts (LACWD) to Buy Lake Berryessa Water; Will Make Glory Hole Spill Over Every Year!
by Evan Kilkus

Everyone who loves Lake Berryessa wants to see the lake flow over the world-famous Glory Hole spillway. (Photos below from 2019) Recent talks between Los Angeles County and Solano County might make that an annual occurrence. Currently, almost all the water in Lake Berryessa goes to Solano County which funded Monticello Dam construction.

Currently, the Solano County Water Agency (SCWA) uses as much water as it can from Lake Berryessa and only buys water from the state system when needed. This is one reason that in years like 2024, with an average amount of rain, the lake hovers just inches below full without going over the rim.

“It turns out, the Berryessa water is worth more to us if we sell it to the great people of Los Angeles.”, said SCWA engineer Justan Kiddn. “If we let the lake overflow Glory Hole and send it down to L.A., they will pay a premium for our great water. We can just buy more water from the State Water Project and make money.”

“You might think it would be difficult to get the water to L.A. County, but with new technology from Elon Musk’s The Boring Company, we can have a 5 foot diameter underground pipeline built in just 10 months, and no one will even know it is there”, explained LA's Chief Water Acquisitions Specialist John Waters Lawnsmore.

“Our engineers have already developed a connector device we will install onto the output side of the Glory Hole spillway pipe below the dam. With all the pressure of the water blasting out, it should easily push the water to LA in a matter of hours.”
The Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) built the Monticello Dam. The Solano Irrigation District (SID) manages the dam, controlling valves that release the flow of water. SCWA distributes the water. All agencies have approved this plan.

“We could just divert the water from the existing outflow pipes at the base of the dam into the new pipeline, but we figured it would be more pleasing to the public to see the water go over the Morning Glory Hole before entering the diversion tunnel”, said Chief Valve Turner, Clifes Good.

“The idea is a win-win-win”, said Napa Valley Department of Tourism Director Susan Saywaaa. Solano County still gets all the water it needs. L.A. County gets a new dedicated winter water source. Lake Berryessa fans can rest assured knowing that as long as it rains at least 10 inches every year they'll get to see the Glory Hole spill over.”

The campgrounds and marinas are already getting ready to promote and cash in on this new plan. “We’ve ordered a ton of shirts, hats, and selfie sticks that we plan to sell every Saturday and Sunday from 8-4 right there at the Monticello Dam parking lot”, said Steele Canyon Campground's manager Sunny Daily. “We look forward to seeing more visitors in the springtime when the hills are green, the lake is calm, and Glory Hole will be spilling for at least 6 weeks solid!”

For those who can’t visit personally to see the water flow in person, not to worry. You’ll be able to tune in online for a live webcam view and water level tracking data. Dam managers are teaming up with the experts at our local internet provider, Valley Internet, which already installs a water monitoring service, Meter Me, meant to help rural homeowners and farmers monitor their real time water tank capacities.

“Meter Me will be excited to provide real time lake level updates sent directly to your phone or other device”, said spokesperson Isthis Ajoke. “As you can now set alerts on your phone when your water tank gets too low, you will also be able to receive a notice when the lake reaches 440 feet and officially starts to spill over. I can’t wait for that text alert!”

“California people like to enjoy outdoor experiences. "And nothing says adventure like a full lake and a spillway that’s spilling!” exclaimed Marty Rodden, owner of Lake Berryessa Boat and Jet Ski Rentals. “We have a fleet of four patio boats that will leave the dock every hour for a three hour lake cruise to the Monticello Dam to see the Glory Hole. That's plenty of time to stop and take pictures at the dam. As we are cruising along the shoreline, we are sure to see bald eagles and other wildlife too! All perfect photo ops for your Instagram and TikToks!”

“The number one question I get when people are looking to buy a house at the lake is "Can I see the spillway from my porch?" stated local realtor Amber Payne with Corcoran Icon Properties. “I have to tell there are breathtaking and sweeping views of the lake and Blue Ridge from parts of the Berryessa Highlands, Berryessa Pines, Spanish Flat, and Berryessa Estates, but, unfortunately no, there are no homes available near Monticello Dam because it is too steep.”

“I drive by the dam and Glory Hole every day on the way to work, but I don’t get it. "What’s the big deal”, said a Lake Berryessa Boat Repair mechanic who didn’t want to be identified. “But we have sold more Mercury Marine motor upgrades and done more bottom cleans and tune-ups than ever. People can’t wait to get their boats running in tip-top shape and cruise faster than ever so they can race to the dam as soon as they get that darn text alert. I just have to remind them to look out for floating debris on the lake this time of year.”

This deal has yet to be finally approved, but project leaders are optimistic. They have already announced that they can guarantee that the next spill over the Glory Hole will be Saturday, March 1st, 2025, at noon.

(Disclaimer: If you've made it this far, hopefully you have realized today is April Fools Day!)

It seems the official start of "Filling Berryessa 2025" has been logged.

Glory Hole Watch 2025

Glory Hole Watch 2025 starts off with a bang - an unusual early rainfall. Was it a bomb cyclone, atmospheric river, or the old pineapple express?

Lake Berryessa Statistics (11/26/24)

Another .08 inches of showers on Monday has led to a total of 6.84 inches at Monticello Dam as of 11/26/24

The lake level has stopped rising and has been stable at to 431.9 feet, (8.1 feet below Glory Hole) for the last 3 days.

Water temperature continues to drop and has reached 58 degrees.

Lake output is up slightly to 60 cfs (cubic feet per second) or 119 A-F (acre feet per day).

The Gamble Gauge shows the lake capacity rose to 90.4%.

For comparison the Cobb Area County Water District at the north end of the Lake Berryessa watershed just reported that,

"As of 8 AM on November 26th our 24 hour rainfall total is .25", bringing the 24/25 season total to 26.36".

Their total are usually four times what falls at Monticello Dam.

Moving on up,
Lake Berryessa Statistics (12/20/24)

The rain total has grown to 10.49 inches at Monticello Dam as of 12/20/24.

Lake level is now at 434.4 feet, now only 5.6 feet below Glory Hole.

Water temperature continues to drop and has reached 54 degrees.
Lake output is back up to 85 cfs (cubic feet per second) or 16 A-F (acre feet per day).
The Gamble Gauge shows the lake capacity is at 93%.

Glory Hole Watch 2025
(January 9, 2025)

It is statistically likely that Glory Hole will overflow in 2025, but when?

Although rainfall has been good to date, and we are only 3.0 feet below Glory Hole, we need another 5 inches of rain to overflow, depending on how many dry spells we may get. At the present lake level, every inch of rain on saturated ground raises the lake about 7 inches. The charts below give some historical context

****************************************
Lake Berryessa Statistics (1/9/25)

The rain total has grown to 12.34 inches at Monticello Dam.

Lake level is now at 437.0 feet, now only 3 feet below Glory Hole.

Water temperature continues to drop and has stabilized at 53.5 degrees.

Lake output has risen slightly 100 cfs (cubic feet per second) or 198 A-F (acre feet per day).

I'm currently having a nice 70* day, looking into a rain thing.
From the website. http://lakeberryessanews.com/

The latest light rains have saturated the soil enough so that appreciable runoff has begun. At this lake level Lake Berryessa rises about 7 inches for every inch of rain - depending on the controlled output of the dam. Since the level is now officially at 438.7 feet, 1.3 feet (15.6 inches) below Glory Hole, about 3 inches of new rainfall should do the trick.

This rain may do it this year.

About 2.22 inches of rain at Monticello Dam during the last five days has brought the total up to 14.58 inches. It's certainly possible, even probable, that Glory Hole will overflow during this first week of February 2025.

only 1ft left to go!
