Good Everyday Boots?

I can't afford to go cheap. Everytime I tried I ended up the the cheap gear sitting in storage and replacing it with good gear. Buying gear twice isn't cheap

Spend a few bucks more and get a pair of chargers. Not sure how they'd fit on a cbr

My current boots are pretty worn out (and they're for cruisers anyway). I'm looking for something that's ~$200 that gives a good balance of protection and comfort/reliability for everyday use. What can you guys recommend?

Used pair of Alpinestars SMX-Plus. Hands down the best boot you'll ever put on your cloven hooves.

I recently visited Helmut over in Fremont and he set me up with these Daytona Road Star GTXs. Pretty damn comfy, and surprisingly he had a pair of 13s on the shelf. That's more that I can say for any other moto shop when I've shopped for boots for my Hun foots. Fucken helluva nice guy, too, talked my ear off for at least an hour. Good peeps over there.

I have ridden supersports in them, but if it the ergos are very aggressive probably not. They are slightly chunky especially at first. If you are used to very thin boots then they may feel odd until you get used to them.

That said they feel normal to me after 3 years and I have ridden many different bikes with them on and never had a problem.

Thanks for the feedback. I'd probably have to adjust the shifter to make it work with the thicker touring boots, so then transitioning between the S-MX Plus and touring boots would be no fun.

Maybe you got the knock off brand, Da'Tonyas.

As far As I can tell Helimot is exclusive USA dealer of Daytona products. I seriously doubt they are distributing counterfeits.

Maybe Helmut gave me the mate's rate cause I'm such an awesome dude.

He's probably been sitting on those awesome size 13's (!) forever :p

From my own personal experience, I would say try the Dianese Torque Outs. I've had mine for about 2.5 years. After wearing them to school and walking around all day in them, to all day rides, they feel like regular shoes. There was practically no break-in period of discomfort, and the protection is excellent.

I personally crash tested mine, and they held up great. You can watch the video in THIS THREAD and see in the 10-11 second mark where my left ankle would have been destroyed by the extreme pronation which would have occurred if I were wearing lesser boots or shoes. I walked away without even a hint of soreness. They were pretty new then. About 20k miles later, they still look and feel great.

I have the Torque Outs and they are pretty comfy, but I mostly just use them on my sport bikes for weekend rides.

Currently for my daily commuting I use a pair of Bilt Typhoons I paid $30 for. They lasted about 9 months before the soles wore through and I just rode to a cyclegear and traded them in for a new pair. Hard to beat the 5 year warranty and they are super comfy and warm.

I tried on the Alpinestars Web Goretex and the were fantastic, but I couldn't justify buying them when my Bilts work just fine.

I have a pair of these as well, and I can't believe a motorcycle boot can be as well-made, comfortable and warm. I wear them almost every ride. I especially love how easy they are to don and doff--so easy my 2-year-old likes to take my boots off for me! Great boots.

Pricey, true, but they are made 100% in Germany and has an amazing array of features. Prices actually start under $400...and go up to over $1000 if you want the super-duper carbon/kevlar roadrace boot.

Gore-tex boots are guaranteed for the life of the boot against leakage, and Daytona boots are re-soleable (at the factory). So $400 means these will be your boots for however many more years you ride.

Fucking rad boots, but pretty out of my price range. I'm not reaching for the top shelf here. Even a modestly priced boot would kick the ass of the shitkickers I wear now.

So far the S-MX 5 is looking to be what I should get. Sporty enough for heavy street riding, great value, and enough features to keep me interested.

I have the SMX Plus as well. Awesome boot, but not an all day comfortable boot by any means.

Used Sidi. I got mine for $120 and they were practically new when I picked them up and top of the line also (about $450 new). Awesome protection and durability and they turned out to be rain proof as well. Of all the gear I have I would rate them as my most satisfactory purchase and would pay for a new pair next go round if I can't score something similar used.

even better if you can find new, but open box like on CL.

notes on SMX5:
-not waterproof. this matters a lot if you ride in non water proof ish pants, and not at all if your pants have goretex and go over the boot.
-because it's not waterproof, they don't overheat your feet.
-the sole on mine have lasted a lot longer than i ever expected. like 3 years later and these are still useful. i wear them often, see below.
-they don't stink over time, which is a surprise. i wear mine, on average, 6 days a week.
-protective when i low sided, didn't disintegrate, still wearing them.

That sounds really good. I should definitely try to find that "open box" deal you mentioned. As far as wet weather, I can just wear the boots I have now (as they are waterproof, but generally shitty).

Well thanks for the thread. I'll be going with Daytona GtX soon. I have SMX plus/whatever. Great comfy boots but I hate walking around with toe sliders plus they keep falling off. Those GTX would be hard to tell you even have a moto boot on.
