Goodbye Small Gas Engines after 2024 - Cali Ban

I'm looking forward to the lack of leaf blower engine noise.

How do you deal with the wind noise when you ride?? :twofinger

I have always equated that noise as people getting work done. So it does not really bother me. Same for the wind. Getting miles done.

Just picking on you man. Nothing personal. :teeth

Honestly I’ve never paid attention. I think a tank on my big saw is 20oz and that lasts about 45 minutes depending on how hard it’s run. But again I’ve never really paid attention, run till I need fuel, fill up repeat until the job is done.

NO. Fuck those things between the hours of 7pm and 11am.

Well I only hear them from 8am to 6pm.
So on the same page.

Except you need to get up earlier.

or the FOUR TIMES A DAY my crackhead neighbor uses his goddamn backpack leaf blower to "clean off" his 10x10 patio or dry off his car he's washed for the 3rd time.

OK, so your tank is, give or take, half a liter. Gasoline has an energy density of 34.2 MJ/L, so your tank would hold about 17.1 MJ of energy. Modern cars are about 30 to 35% efficient, I'm pretty sure that gas powered tools are much less energy efficient, but let's be reasonably generous and give it the 30%. With that, you end up with about 5.13 MJ of usable energy per tank of gas used.

Electric motors can get pretty darn close to 100% efficient. The best Lithium Ion batteries right now can get to 2.63 MJ/L. So you would probably need a battery that is roughly 2 Liters, 4 times the size of the original tank, that weighs 6 to 8 pounds, to match the 45 minute lifespan. So long as you can deal with the charging issue, You probably could go just about as long as you want trading off between 2 batteries of that size. If someone wanted to just go 8 hours on one charge, you would be looking at some type of heavy battery backpack that would be at least 20 liters, and 60 to 80 pounds, probably too heavy.

Don't you vampires wear earplugs in your lair?

Ah city folk. Batteries solves everything.

Nobody has said anything about hydrogen powered chainsaws?

Our power grid is already screwed, why do we continue to put more pressure on it? If there is a plan to build more hydroelectric dams or put a nuke plant in a great place like Blyth or Oakland, we are just kicking the can down the road...

Cars are 4 stroke motors and saws and weed eaters are 2 stroke, which are more efficient. My saw has a 59cc motor that puts out 4.2 hp. For comparison a 150 cc 4 stroke lawnmower engine produces about the same amount of power.

So, to deal with the CALIFORNIA PLANNED ELECTRICITY OUTAGES, I bought a gas generator so my life can function when they shut off my electricity and all communication with the outside world for 4-5 days at a time.

Right up to the moment the gen powering the hub for your neighborhood goes dry...1-2 days?

Electric saws are a joke except for small stuff. And what of the batteries? Millions upon millions of new batteries will be made. And where do they end up when they die? Are we prepared to recycle that many batteries? Do you know where most batteries are made? And by who? Foreign heavy metal mines run by child labor. Then loaded onto a huge DIESEL powered boat and piloted across the ocean so people here can drive a Prius and claim “ they’re helping”

Nobody bothers to mention that the forest fires this year put more pollutants into the air than we will ever be able to do as a society with our leaf blowers. And the fires were as bad as they were due to forestry mismanagement. More over reaching laws that do NOTHING to solve a problem. But line some politicians buddies pockets. Long live IC.

One of those saws had a 20 minute no load run time. Ya that's gonna give you like 2 cuts before needing a new battery.

I don't even like cordless sawzals

Nope. 2 strokes will produce more power and torque from a smaller engine, but they are actually substantially less efficient when it comes to fuel use. It's actually really generous to assume 30% efficiency from a 2 stroke, in reality it's probably way less than 20%. Because of how 2 stokes are designed, fuel-air mixture is allowed to escape from a piston along with exhaust, instead of actually being used. This is both a primary reason 2 strokes pollute a lot more than 4 strokes, and the main reason they are so much less efficient.

Have you tried any of the new 56V commercial grade chain saws? I keep seeing a lot of reviews on the EGo stuff. 256 cuts on a full charge seems like it will get you going for a long time.

And, it has a similar advantage that electric cars do in that you get max torque almost right away.

A battery technology breakthrough is coming, soon, or not long after, well eventually, in our lifetime, maybe…

Windshield and earplugs. If the windshield is good - like Purple Rain good, no ear plugs needed. :teeth:teeth

It seems like every few years, someone comes up with higher voltage battery powered tools. I’m already starting to see 80V battery powered chain saws. I don’t think it will be that long before they up the voltage to a point where the battery life goes from useable to good.

I remember when my 12V Makita drill barely lasted long enough to drill a few holes and put in a drywall screws. Now, I have a cheap 20V drill with an extended aftermarket battery. I use it a lot with a toilet brush accessory. I haven’t charged the battery in something like 6 months.

I don’t think it will be long before battery powered garden tools are the norm rather than the exception.

And, as annoying as CARB can be sometimes, I just remind myself what it was like growing up in San Jose not being able to see the surrounding foothills because the smog was so thick.

But, that only works if you first purify yourself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka.
