HoHo Midsummer Magic Rally. August 12-14, 2022

My starting clock in Weaverville,

I hit 3 north out of town, no map, no plans, and a couple hours to burn.
Passed one road east, took the second one, Trinity dam. Eventually made a loop with these two roads
For some reason it reminds me of Berryessa, the road not over engineered for radius, just gets there. That and the heat, but wrong foliage, humidity is the spoiler here, all about 2000' about the same. Playing peek a boo with the water, hard to see.

The afternoon blow ups for thunderheads, not as threatening as Flagstaff @ 7000' But still spitting rain 5:pm

Finally found a vista, I can't see mountain tops/clouds for the steep hills & trees deep in the canyons/gulches.

Low water in the lake, but the forbay, Lewiston Lake is up, pretty community.

I wish my weather app listed altitude too.
Surprisingly I was up above 5000' in Westwood, I liked that weather, high 80's , while here in Weaverville low 100's,
Forecasting is raising overall temps, again to high 90's for this weekend.

looking pretty smoke-free ... :thumbup

hope to start heading north on Saturday, 08/06/22, if I can get my old KLR to start ... :facepalm

confirmed my 49er reservation with Bobbert, yesterday, they gave my room #13 to a firefighter who is still there.

so if all goes well, I anticipate checking in to room #14 on Thursday afternoon--ideally after camping a night at Lewiston Lake w/ Mr m0t0_ryder on Weds ... :party

we'll see ... :blah

Nice.
Hot as usual this time of year.
Looking forward to the week up there.
Hope to head out Monday morning. Destination, Ackerman campground, Lewiston Lake. Until Friday, then into Weaverville.

I'll have to check in with Bobert and see if there is a need for the rooms for the fire fighters. If so, I could give up mine and stay in my trailer... where-ever.

Good point! I can stay in my van if I can access a bathroom.

Brewery was open Wed, burger & beer for me, a really nice porter with a hint of spice on the back end, and a growler of hazy lime lager.
Got some grocery time too, nice Holiday market, fairly well stocked. The one in Chester got cleaned out every weekend.
5 o'clock shower spit again, Hayfork got hammered, but missed here.

Today I'm heading west on 299 for a town or to, expanding my dining options, , ,

I believe there is room in my park to stay, they do tenting.
Quite a few fire crews are in town, clean trucks, so not off the current fire line, but reserves.
All low key, no urgency.

I just spoke with Bobert.
The barf rooms are good from Friday on.
The fire crews staying there are reserves and will be ending their shift on Friday, departing then.
We will not be displacing fire crews by our visit.

SFMCjohn... Bobert informed me that you will be arriving Friday now (instead of Thursday). As I'm sure you know you are welcome to spend Thursday night as well as Wednesday night at my Lewiston camp. Unless, of course, you seek higher ground. aka Lookout towers.

I'll have my powered sit on top fishing kayak. I could bring my inflatable kayak (and vest) if you'd like to float/paddle around some. I think you've seen this kayak in the pool at the 49'er in years past. Let me know if you would be interested.

There's also (dirt) trails/roads on the hills to the west of Ackerman that I may explore on the TW while I'm there. Noticed some of the trailheads off of Trinity Dam road a couple years ago.

sounds awesome! :thumbup
one thing I've learned is to never turn down the opportunity to float around on a kayak in the middle of a KLR ride ... :laughing:gsxrgrl

guess I'll see if I can buy a CA fishing license today. will be shooting to see you on Weds and Thurs, think I'm going to try to camp on Tuesday up at the photo point we checked out on the Redding Dirt Rider's Chappie/Shasta dual-sport ride earlier this year. :ride

You can buy the fishing license online and print out your receipt.

Weaverville @ 103*

299 west, I got as far as Big Bar, thru two "one lane only, flagman" sun bakes.
Pulled over looking for shade, little to be found in these deep narrow rivers, shade under a thin pine in the river access park.
Another 17 to Burnt Ranch, didn't look promising, losing altitude and getting warmer.
I went back to the TOPS, Trinity Adventure Park, store, campground, rafting,
chilled out over a gateraid.
Heading home, stopped @ Oregon pass above Weaverville.
Not a fan of this humidity

Whew! You’re one of the reasons I’m making the trek! Still deciding what bike to bring, part of me wants to bring “Mo” my ‘76 Elsinore.

Private forum is quiet! Do we have a headcount for the best ever rally?

Oops...
I didn't realize the private forum was up.

Just started a "Meals" thread over there.

It happened again, Willow Creek caught fire yesterday.

I was out for the day north on 3, heading for Trinity Center,(another "one lane road, traffic lights)

Low water in lake, all those retirement dreams, people bought into the marinas, now the water is a half mile away, and no shade.
When I was in Westwood, I got to worry about my rig getting toasted, while I was out riding. Not being there to save it.
Willow Creek, Weaverville, Redding, Susanville, all have been sporting triple digits, primed to burn.

A few minutes after I got home, the SO, code three, escorting big loader on a flatbed, heading west to Willow Creek. Then the manager told me what was burning, as I went out for a burro.
I still have 36 to go west, if needed.
