clean off the extra grease and try it out :thumbup you'll be amazed it feels soooo much better!! i have know idea why they don't pack them with grease from the factory :wtf.

All my shit is craftsman and I know some of mine could use this....if I ever find the time I will do it...someday!

I guess the no-grease when new is similar to the lack of swingarm grease in many new bikes...stupid!
 
it doesn't take very long to do. the whole thing took me 10~12 minutes and thats with taking all the photos. if you mess it up or lose any of the small parts just take it back to sears for a new 1 and start over :laughing

Dude, that's an awesome post.. I dunno why, but I never even thought about doing something like this. I'm sure I can get all my rachets working way better.

Can I just point out one thing thats sorta ironical?

its not "fixing" its "servicing" theres a difference :laughing
 
For anyone who is having any problems with their "Craftsman" ratchets. keep in mind that it is a craftsman ratchet and it carries a lifetime warranty. so you can take it back and get a exchange at any Sears or Orchard Supply. But if your one of those people who carry a sentamental value with your tools. You can purchase all the internales (sp) new for your ratchet at sears for $0.01 yes one penny.

I've been taking my ratchets apart for years.
They work and sound so much better afterwards.
I prefer the white lithium grease though.

i don't charge for it :laughing i did that guys because we were comparing ours @ his place when i did the valves on his zx-6r. i just showed him how to do it.

lithium is fine, hell any good grease is fine. its better than being bone dry like they sell them to you when new.

post up what you think about it before and after :teeth. remember the little ball bearing is spring loaded.
 
whats the black oily compound they put into the new ratchets? I've been cleaning my tools after every couple uses, but all i do is spray it down with orange glo, wipe them clean then spray 10w-40 onto the ratchet head and let it seap in. Next time im taking it apart, the grease seems better than having 10w-40 leak out haha.

edit: Haha had too much time, just did it and the ratchets are smoother, the click isnt as loud.

Oh shit, the ball bearing is spring loaded. I didn't realize that! Now I know what the tink noise in my garage was and why the ratchet goes both ways no matter which way I push the lever.:mad

Your steps-by-steps were awesome. My ratchets are not quite as high end as yours so some steps were different, but the action is so much smoother, not only in the ratchet mechanism, but in the reversing lever as well. I will definately be doing this to my other Craftsmen ratchets.
