HuaWei CFO Arrested in Canada Facing Extradition to US

Kinda fucked up that one nation can decide two other nations can't trade with each other and arrest a foreign citizen for doing just that.
If the US decides to send arms to Iran to fund some rebel fighters in Nicaragua they sure as shit aren't going to ask for China's permission.

Not fucked up at all. Any nation is free to trade with any nation, as long as they don't use our banking system to do it. She's not in trouble for trading with Iran; she's (potentially) in trouble for making fraudulent representations to U.S. banks in order to execute those transactions. The U.S. doesn't dictate who can trade with who, only what trading can be done on the U.S. financial system.

Being detained seems wrong and I know I'm not the only American that things that. What if they put the first lady in jail for "unspecified charges".

She requested the charges not be disclosed prior to her bail hearing, which is her right. It wasn't Canada or the U.S. withholding disclosure. And the charges were already common knowledge as the allegations have been out there for a while.

She was arrested on a valid arrest warrant and just because she's Chinese or a senior executive doesn't mean she should be treated any differently. The allegations against her are serious felonies. Do you think Ghosn's arrest in Japan was wrong?

Everyone should just let the court proceedings play out. That said, if Trump intervenes in any way, shape or form to protect her, his chance of reelection will go from slim to none. The best thing that could come of out of this would be for her to be indicted, take a plea with no jail time, and for Huawei products to be banned from import into the U.S.

Why? Microsoft and google, et al, have been sued in other countries by governments and once they pay and mend their ways, they go on trading. I understand that HuaWei may have backdoors in some products, but I am not convinced others don't have backdoors, also. What other reason would there be, except to show how tough we are with our trade policies? They are not accused of espionage or theft or anything. I am conflicted because of U.S. hypocrisies and minor financial concerns and my Nationalism.

Does she have US citizenship? No. I fail to see why a non-citizen needs to obey US sanctions.

The correct course of action, instead of arresting a foreign national, would be to shut down HuaWei's US operations or bank accounts.

She needs to not fraudulently use the US financial system to evade sanctions because... we said so. That's how sovereignty works. Mess with the biggest kid on the block, get slugged.

Its already known that US tech companies put backdoors in for the feds so I'm not sure where that leaves us.

Being hypocrites, of course, which is an issue for me. We do it all the time, unfortunately. We do with our internal politics, too. Makes me crazier than my mom makes me. :x

Translation: "Hello, I am MENG Wanzou. Currently, I have been detained by Canadian customs. I have limited use of my phone. Right now CIA is trying to get me into the hands of the US government. I bribed the guard of my room, and urgently need US$2000 to get out of here. Once I am out, I will reward you 200,000 shares of Huawei. I will be good on my word. if you are single, we can also discuss the important thing in life. The guard’s name is David, the account number is 52836153836252, swift 55789034. Worth a shot i guess

Who's the biggest kid on the block, in your analogy?

We are, in terms of GDP, alliances, military capability, and financial system control. Whether it continues to be that way, is sort of the point of this whole thing...

If she does get bail she is essentially stuck on an island and can’t slip away to another country. Not like she is going to go to the US or trek all the way out to the Atlantic to flee to France. (There are two small French islands near Newfoundland)

If I'm reading this correctly, you can bang one of the most influential people in the Chinese hierarchy for two grand.

Really, do a little research and see if you can find out where Huaweii is alleged to have obtained their original core IP.

Additionally, it has been alleged that Huaweii willingly violated the Iran sanctions and in doing so defrauded financial institutions. If proven, the U.S. should not be a trading partner with them. Also, you do know the Chinese government protects Huaweii against foreign competition in China, right?

Really? You don't think private jets fly in and out of Vancouver bound for China on a daily basis? Do you know how many Chinese nationals live in Vancouver? If she wasn't under constant guard, she could easily flee Canada and jump bail. And if the charges against her are true, she'd be very smart to do so. The argument that she wouldn't want to shame her family and/or wouldn't risk losing $15 million, when she's facing charges that carry a 30 year prison term is laughable. Let's see, go to the U.S. and maybe do serious jail time, or grab a flight home and let my billionaire daddy pay for a luxe lifestyle for the rest of my life. Hmmm, such a Sophie's choice.

Interesting choice for China. Evacuate their prodigal child and create an international incident, giving the US a pretext to implement even more punitive measures. Or let her wait in limbo and hope the dispute resolves through due process...
