If you are interested in an EV

Intestinally, the lack of exhaust heat underneath EV's allows snow/ ice to build up underneath and add more weight than an ICE. That being said, I've started the hunt for a model Y for my sister who lives in snow country and won't start maintaining her cars property. Her 2016 Explorer sport she blew up at 90K miles by putting 85 octane (at altitude) in it, the entire life. I only found out when I drove her 2023 Explorer sport when I was back with her and the thing sounded like a rattle can.

I've never seen 85 octane. But thanks for the topic as it motivated me to look up what's required for my Lexus. So far so good, 87 is good for all my vehicles.

Colorado has 85 octane...altitude thing, pretty sure.

14,000 lb single person motor vehicles hurtling around. What a great idea!

I'm not aware of any 7-ton EV's.

Do you feel the same about full-size SUV's and pickup trucks?
F150 Lightning weighs about a ton more than ICE F150 (6500 pounds VS 4000 - 5000 pounds)

Hummer EV is the heaviest I think at about 10,000 pounds. Silverado EV is close at about 9000 pounds.

You're not getting into the 7 ton range until you start talking about Semi's. Regular Diesel is about 19,000 pounds (with fuel) Tesla Semi is ~21,000 pounds.........whether or not the battery is full. lol.

Dudes commuting to their tech/finance office jobs in an F150 (or even an F250) never cease to amuse me
My two old coworkers used to drive their fully built rock crawlers to work as commuters. Air lockers, back halved, exo cage, 37's.....and 99.9% of the miles/use were just for going to work and shopping and whatnot. Oh, and they moved to florida and brought their crawlers with them. Where they live is flat for I don't know how many miles in every direction.

That's what the Autotrain is for. I took it from DC to Sanford with my dad's motorcycle to start an East Coast road trip. A lot of my cotravelers were in crawlers, truggies, and all manner of "street legal" off-road, Mud Bogging, max articulation hardware to enjoy the West Virginia wilds without having to endure 900 miles if I95.

That's a good service. Strange that it's only offered in one part of the country.

It's a pretty larger area of operation on the East Coast. Almost the entire Eastern seaboard.

Yep, its a direct ride from Sanford FL to DC or the reverse. It leaves (in both directions) at 4pm and arrives at 9am the next morning. It makes no stops. Well, it stops in South Carolina for water and to offload garbage, but no passengers get on or off. It's an overnight ride with dinner and breakfast included in the price of the fare.

I was going to do a 4 corners ride and use it to cover a day and a half of riding while asleep in a sleeper car but that fell through. So I just took a week off work and flew out to my dad's place in Akron OH. Hopped on dad's Sportster 1200, bee lined to DC got on the train and started my leisurely return the next day. I had wanted to unlock that achievement (Motorcycle as checked luggage) since I first heard about the Auto Train years prior. That was a great trip. I got to see the shortest river in FL, the oldest bridge in FL, Georgia Guidestones, the oldest bridge in South Carolina, Helen's Bridge, the tree that owns itself, and other out-of-the-way spots.

Good info, thanks! Had someone do it years ago who was bringing a vehicle for our PA facility to FL. They said it was a neat trip, actually.

Was looking at the Big Beautiful Tax Breaks I saw on Jalopnik. "light vehicles" !!!

Vehicles under a GVR of 14000 can be found in smaller businesses like ours. An example is the new EV commercial van we purchased has a GVR of 11,000lbs. Our neighbor has a tree company and his dump truck exceeds the GVR of 14000lbs. Different tax benefits for different class of vehicles.
