Insomnia

I'd be interested in what you learn.
Perhaps PM me if you deem it's worth it?

I will indeed.

I also started a new diet and wondering how much it is contributing. My wife pointed out I cut the fat too low and am probably low on calories aswell. I had high fat high calorie diet prior.

I have an appointment with the nutritionist tomorrow

I cut carbs/sugar and it really changed the way my body metabolizes salt and caffeine. It used to be that I'd get a headache in the middle of the night if I had a salty dinner, or had trouble sleeping if I had coffee, even if it were first thing in the morning. We've been low carb/sugar since October and I had forgotten about that problem, so a few months ago I was like, ohhhhh yeah...that used to be a thing. But, it just faded away.

If you try melatonin, maybe try the tums with 5mg melatonin and eat like 1/8th of it. And keep in mind that all it does is provide you a short window to help fall asleep, so don't take it thinking that you'll get even more tired if you just stay up a little longer, because you'll miss your window and it won't work as well. Go to bed the moment you feel it.

And of course exercise is always the best. There is no substitute for just flat out wearing your body out. Substances and whatnot is more of a backup. Weed is pretty good, but smoking flower dries out my sinuses. Edibles are nice, but if one were new, there's a learning curve to getting it dialed in. They have some 1mg gummies that are a great starting point so you don't wreck yourself.

Solid Byke post is solid....as usual.

I wish I had an answer for you because insomnia still plagues me. Weed helps but I don't think that's a really good solution to a problem of having natural sleep. It's not a real solution.

The best solution I know is to talk to someone you trust because after those thoughts swimming around in my head are purged, I can sleep easier. Or those kind of conversations make stir up more thoughts which sometimes keeps me up later than expected. Me and 3AM are good friends... The witching hour...

Or you can just cheat and take a few drams of whiskey which is not a good option because that is not a good night's sleep the way it should be.

How are your energy levels through the day?

I've never really had insomnia. But what I used to do was think of something pleasurable and before i knew it, I'd be asleep.

Your brain is constantly on. It can't be shut off. There's no way to do that. So I'd give my brain something different to think about. Something pleasurable. What I'd do specifically is design, in my head, my ideal custom hot rod. A 1953 Studebaker coupe. I'd think of all the modifications I'd make to it. How I'd change the engine and running gear, the body, etc. Just day dreaming about my Studebaker. Doing this was pleasurable to me and kept my brain from thinking about things I didn't have any control over.

my dude is one of those who’s brain never shuts down. doesn’t keep him awake. or silent. he falls asleep fast, but talks in his sleep all night long.

The only way to shut your brain down is to die. What you have to do is give your brain something else to think about. Something that isn’t stressful or worrisome. Something you enjoy.

Another thing I used to do was run CAD in my head, solving a particular design challenge in my field of work. Eventually I’d fall asleep and the next day at work, I’d have it all worked out and all I’d have to do is execute what was already in my head.

beg to differ. mine shuts down routinely. sometimes unexpectedly and inconveniently. heartbeat and breathing - functional. mental capacity? warning: system off-line. reboot advised. and have observed that same phenomena in others.

It may seem like it shuts down, but it really doesn’t. Your awareness may seemingly shut down for awhile but your brain never does. It may go into a different state of operation but it’s always thinking. That’s why giving it something else to think about works.

One thing that may help is eat dinner much earlier before sleeping. Going for a walk after dinner would help as well. I get horrible acid reflux and it keeps me up if i eat too much, too late or laying down after eating.

It's not just your brain that keeps you up. It's your physical health as well. Restless leg, cramps, pinched nerves, allergic reactions/itchiness. Some of those things might let you fall asleep, but will wake you up constantly. Your body is constantly monitoring/moderating/modulating itself. Be aware of your physical health as well as your mental.

was not referring to insect brain function. but hey, you knew that, right?

Well, I am awake now and it’s two something in the morning. Of course in Pakistan it’s to something in the afternoon.

I am lucky as I sleep solidly. No caffeine after 10am for me.

If I get stoned once in a while I have any trouble falling asleep I will run through riding Pagemill Road in my brain. Usually asleep before I get to Skyline. :laughing

Good luck Banshee

Most of the time I get 6 hours sleep but can go for days getting just 4-5 and function fine. Mentioned that to a dr once and he said it was unhealthy so prescribed dayvigo. It works but I avoid any sort of drug as much as possible. My first goto sleep aid is ear plugs, I might pop a pill once every two weeks so a prescription last a year or more.

I have been running off of a typical 5-6 hours a night for for like 35 years with extensions of 10-12 hours at some point on the weekend. Works fine for me.

My older sister gets about five hours sleep a night and claims that it's plenty. But anytime things slow down during the day and she's just sitting, she starts to doze off. I generally get seven or more and rarely start feeling like I need a "nap" during the day.

I put on a podcast and I never make it through till the end!
