There's definitely degradation in earplugs...
Wax and other dirt accumulates on the surface, and prevents a good seal. The foam also degrades after multiple compression cycles, resulting a decrease in the plug's ability to block out outside sounds.
$23 shipped for 200 pairs was what I last paid. That lasts me about a year, (change plugs every 1.5 days) and that's cheap enough that I seriously don't care.
When you buy in bulk, the cost savings makes it easy to toss them and keep performance optimal. Given that you can *never* get your hearing back, this is cheap insurance. Toss 'em, and get another pair.

I didn't think so. Noise reduction wasn't any better than with any other NRR33 earplug and because the custom plugs are so rigid, they're very easy for me to knock out of place while pulling my helmet on.

I did that a few years back and they didn't work for me to cut out the higher frequencies - the ones you get from wind noise. I went back the next year and had them "adjust" them for me, but it still didn't help.
Foam earplugs work best for me and I can wear them all day comfortably. And who can argue with paying around twenty bucks for two hundred pairs?

I ran the Radians custom ear plugs in years past with good success. The kit is less than $10 if you want to give them a try....vs what ever they wanted at the show for nearly the same thing.
I mentioned I used the kit ones when they tried to sell me at the show...They said I was risking my ears because I wasn't qualified to put the silicon in my ears...but they were.
Apparently though, they were qualified to jerk me off while they emptied my wallet.
