Let's be honest, who truly rides ATGATT?

It is a personal decision. Law aside choosing is up to us.
Repercussions are on us.
 
I think I've seen some people that claim to be ATGATT riding non-ATGATT in Hawthorne before...but I'm not one to gossip so you didn't hear that from me. :cool
 
I've been slacking off lately with protection below the waist. I sometimes ride with just Levi's, occasionally with knee guards under those, but often not. For short rides I don't bother with boots. I understand the risks I'm exposing myself to.

I ALWAYS have helmet, gloves and a motorcycle jacket. I now live where there is no helmet law and I'm never tempted to go without a helmet. Surprisingly, helmets are more popular in Idaho than in Utah, and I have no idea why.
 
I dress and ride based on the destination, travel speed, and even the time of day. It's 8:30 am on a Saturday and I'm about to hit the gym that's 3 miles away: jeans, FF and gloves. On the other hand, going to work on Hwy 4 or 680 is ATG. I think it's certainly reasonable to shed some armor if it's appropriate and you know your risks and ride accordingly.
 
I only go ATGATT if im doing a long ride. My work commute <15 minutes I only wear gloves and jacket.

How people use a motorcycle determines how they feel about ATGATT. If a motorcycle is a toy, and every ride is an event, like: “now I’m going to go ride my motorcycle”, ATGATT is a thing, because you either gear up for each of your once-a-week rides, or you don’t. It’s either or. If a motorcycle is transportation, and riding a motorcycle is just how you get things done, then each ride is not an event you prep and gear up for. Things aren’t so black and white. For short ride in the city to go out to eat or run errands gearing up fully would be a pain, but you might still gear up for longer rides.

I think that’s the crux of the difference of opinions between all the ATGATT folks vs. others. If the way that you use a motorcycle is going on long weekend rides, then it seems totally crazy not to be ATGATT. If a motorcycle is your main mode of transportation, then it seems totally crazy to be ATGATT, even for short trips in the city.

Personally, I’m in the latter camp - I wear huge adv boots and my Aerostich for commuting or longer highway trips, but just normal clothes (plus helmet, gloves, and more casual boots) for short trips around the city.
 
Comfort is keeping me from wearing gear within 5 miles of my house, which is bad because most auto (using a technical definition) accidents are within 10 miles of home. Need to buy a light mesh jacket for short trips.

If I'm wearing jeans I'm also wearing knee/shin guards and boots.

Five minutes of gearing up vs. gravel tattoos isn't a contest.
 
Stich, boots, gloves and lid at all times.

Except when I am riding a mini bike in the front yard, then I prefer to drag myself up the street on my kneecaps.

And 3/4 helmet and goggles after I do any sort of important maintenance where the wheels could fall off and kill me.

As with spirited road riding, it comes down to an individual's risk tolerance.

Every now and then, I'll take local trips in jeans & a sweatshirt (with a chest/back protector underneath.

If I don't feel like gearing up I'll take the car. Might be different if I had more opportunities to ride.
