Looking for a good Honda Motorcycle dealer

Made a deal and will pick up Thursday or Friday. Once deal is complete, I will do a little review On all the dealers I dealt with.

In for the write up

I just retired so I have more time than money. The in-state dealers are in red, and the reason there are some out of state dealers is I have friends or family in the area. having purchased about 40 motorcycles and about as many cars over the years I’m aware of tactics used on prospective buyers. The thing I noticed most about some motorcycle dealers is they are using used car sales tactics to entice People in the showrooms. I learned long ago nothing nice happens in showrooms. The way I purchase vehicles is: agree on price, get signed PO, make a deposit (if required), walk in with remaining balance sign DMV paperwork. Takes all of 10 minutes.

Roseville Honda Motorsports
This has to be one of the worst dealers I’ve dealt with.
Will not give out pricing over email (so you don’t have a record of the deal)
Called made the deal, got insurance setup and loan set up.
Once I get to the dealership They then decided to change (increase price) by $250.00. First thing out of the owner’s mouth is (do you have anything in writing)

Ride Now Powersports both locations.
Great starting price, then $2000.00 in setup and preparation fees which
makes them one of the highest price dealers.
Will not negotiate unless in show room.

Carl's Cycle Sales in Boise, ID
Straight forward pricing and great pricing.
Had second best price. Very easy to deal with.
Would have made the drive if co-driver had not broken right ankle.

Southern Honda Powersports
Straight forward pricing and lowest price of all dealers.
Very easy to deal with. Once again would have made the drive
If co-driver had not broken right ankle.

Motoworld of El Cajon
Emailed twice and called once, they never responded.

Vern Eide Motoplex
Straight forward pricing, good pricing.

HONDA KAWASAKI KTM of MODESTO
Emailed twice, called once, they never responded.

Western Honda Powersports
Straight forward pricing and tied for the best price.

East Bay Motorsports Inc.
Started off about $1800 More than other dealers.
Once I told them they were high, they wanted the names
of the dealers who had a better price. I told them pick any other dealer in the state. Then they changed to you have to come in for the best pricing, they were not interested in making a sale.

Hillside Powersports and Marine
Emailed they would contact me and never did. Called them
Never returned call.

Beaverton Motorcycles
High pricing and very hard to deal with.

Fred Cummings Motorsports
Emailed twice and called once no response.

GP SPORTS INC.
Once I told them they were high, negotiations stopped.

Fremont Honda Kawasaki Suzuki
Gave pricing quick, they were about $1800 high. ($1200. In fees)
Told me to come in for better pricing.

SF Moto
Very high pricing and too much in fees.
Told me to come in for better pricing.

Cal Coast Motorsports
Straight forward pricing and fair pricing.
Told me a price up front and told me it was the best he could do.
No games

Contra Costa Powersports
Gave quick pricing but was $1700.00 high.
Willing to deal if I came into the dealership.

Tri-County Powersports
Gave quick pricing but was $1600.00 high.
Willing to deal if I came into the dealership.

Bert’s Mega Mall
Gave quick pricing, Just $2900 high

Santa Barbara Motorsports
Gave quick pricing but was about $1500. High
Gave me a few dealer names that might have better pricing because of there high fees.

Tri-county Powersports
Emailed twice and called once no response.

Cal Coast Motorsports
Quick response and a fair price. Made up for low price with fees.

Berkeley Honda Yamaha
Emailed twice and called once no response.

Hollister Powersports
Emailed twice no response

So where did I purchase?

Gridley Honda
Sent a request for out the door pricing with price breakdown.
They sent pricing, I accepted and they sent me a sign Purchase order.
Called my bank, had them overnight a check to Gridley Honda. Then picked
up bike the next day. Once I arrived it Took all of 10 minutes. (just had to sign DMV paperwork) The people at Gridley Honda were friendly and honest.
They stated their price upfront and played no games. I will be buying an African twin in a few months and they will be the first dealership I call.

That's good to hear, since I've bought two new bikes from them.

No mention of Wilson's in Fresno (okay, Madera). I bought my first Ducati from them. Supposedly one of the oldest dealers around, although they've evolved a bit since then.

I have noticed the dealers I tend to work with the most are the ones that seem to open their eyes and sit up / take notice and not fuck around when they realize they have a low-effort sale opportunity, and I'm a "shop on Friday, own by Monday" kind of guy. That said, I also can read a line-item invoice and have an understanding of MSRP and pricing for motorcycles, and this markup shit is laughable.

I don't even bother with negotiating or haggling or even explaining myself if I don't get a reasonable / intelligent interaction in the first encounter. I get it, these guys deal with bullshitters / scammers / lowballers / tire kickers all day, but some sales folks also either have a hard time listening or are just dense, and it's not worth my time/effort to bother.

Some of the best moto purchases I've had were from John Sr. at Moore & Sons, I'd tell him what I wanted and he'd give me a "fair price" = fair for him, and fair to what I would pay. Carlin Dunne did the same thing for me when I bought a 2014 Multistrada Pikes Peak from him in 2014.

I was lucky enough to get the same treatment from GP Motorcycles here in San Diego when I purchased their 790 Adventure R Rally for just around MSRP - I expected to get some markup bullshit but they were kind.

InsuranceGuy your writeup is fantastic, and I am glad you're keeping folks honest. I find myself not getting caught up in haggles / in-person negotiations anymore and doing that "4 square / let's sit in the finance guy's office for an hour and work over the numbers" horseshit. The dealers win by attrition, but my time is worth more than that so they can just lose the sale and good luck to them on the next guy. I think more folks are going towards this feeling, but motos are small margin and if you want a particular model your choices are even more limited.

Im going in this Sat to look at a Ninja 400 from Contra Costa Powersports. They're advertising $4799 for one of their bikes. Whats a reasonable OTD price for that?

I too tried to contact SF Moto regarding one of their Ninja 400s. Emailed about possibly coming in to take a look at the bike. Got a reply, but nothing after that. Looking at your writeup, I'm surprised you had the same experience with alot of these places. I wonder what the deal is with these guys? They got a line out the door of customers in the middle of this pandemic?

Insurance Guy, did you go by Kelly Blue Book or NADA to get your best price?

Carl's Cycle Sales in Boise can take care of you. I have purchased two new bikes from them (so far).

Are you sure you don't mind driving? :laughing

I bought my truck in Nampa. Took BART to Oakland airport, SWA to Boise and the salesman picked me up at the airport in the truck. I screwed around a bit on the way home or I would have been back the same day I left.

I plugged $4,800 into the DMV fee calculator and used my city/county information (too lazy to look up the zip code for Daly City) so your amount may vary slightly. Worked out to $162 for registration and $420 for tax.

I was looking for dirt bikes for my kids a few months ago and went in one day to check things out. They had Honda CRF110s marked up almost 30% over MSRP. I didn't even bother talking to a salesman and my kids now have used bikes and I saved a few thousand dollars.

One last question - how is the co-driver with the broken ankle doing ( spouse I assume)?

That’s retail, Kawasaki is offering $500 discounts on Ninjas. Might want to shop around To get base pricing.

I did not use any form of guide, KBB, Nada, Edmunds and I can’t remember the fourth Source that people use. I used the dealer’s own network for information.

The person who broke the right ankle was my son. He decided to ride my brand-new Husqvarna 501 without wearing the proper gear (just helmet and gloves). He told me he was just going to ride in the neighborhood. Well, he saw an open field and decided to try and jump the curb. Neither made it. He did a little over $2000. In damage to the bike and broke his ankle, burned a nice 4-inch patch on his calf, abrasions on both knees, both elbows and his back. I call this learning thru Darwinism. He now realizes its All the gear all the time. Thank god he’s ok and that his boot comes off next week, because I’m tired of driving him to and from work.

Oh no, not again
I’m on the hunt for another Honda 450l or I should say a 450RL.I liked my son’s 450 so much, I’ve decided to purchase another. The place I purchased from before will not have another until June. Let the games begin.
