malaysian airline w/ 239 passengers lose contact w/ air traffic control..

with all the redundant safety design in a plane, why in the heck would you make a transponder that can be shut off? Its not like a 777 would ever need to be in stealth mode

Because in flight electrical fires are much more common than this sort of event.

air radars have gaps in elevation. It's pretty easy to avoid being detected. Navy planes avoid air radar all the time. All it takes is to stop squawking your transponder which is often what is used to fill the gaps in commercial aviation radars.

Dude, you can trivially pop in and out of primary coverage only in the US, much less over ocean water:

...and this will get even better if the FAA gets their "modernization" way, where they don't bother with this pesky RADAR thing at all, and just using timing as a cross-check on transponder returns.

Well, that's not comforting at all...

It's not supposed to be. The point is, something like this has happened ONCE. But, the number of in flight electrical fires, partial loss of power, and other events justifying pulling a breaker is huge.

If they wanted to take the plane for whatever reasons, how did they dispose of the passengers?

If it were me I'd....

Go to a high altitude, and disable the oxygen systems and slowly depressurize the cabin. Once everyone was dead due to asphyxia, I'd drop down to a lower altitude, open the door and toss out the bodies.

With that being said, with no debris or bodies in the water, I'm sure they're somewhere in a third world country.

Just my two cents.

It's a real world thing where minimum and maximum sweep angles, terrain, distance, inverse square law, etc. happens.
