Trail Conditions - Saturday 11/22/14
Currently all tracks and trails are open besides Big Creek and Snake. If we get a substantial amount of rain today we will most likely close.
Below is a post explaining why we close when it rains:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Hey Guys,
It sounds like there is some confusion as to why we close when it rains, I hope this help you understand our reasoning. The soil at this park is different than many places, it has a high clay content which make is very slick and sticky when wet.
We close for the following reasons:
1: Safety. We cannot respond to injuries with our patrol trucks. The footprint of the tire is too small in relation to the weight of the vehicle. Therefor we would (a) get stuck (b) slide around causing more of a safety risk to ourselves and others (c) damage the trails from our truck causing erosion.
2: Damaging Trail. When Motorcycles, ATV's and Trucks drive on the trails when they are two were, tire ruts are made cutting into the trail. These ruts collect water and further damage the trails and flood areas. Most importantly, when the trails dry with these ruts they are there and we would have to close trails for extended periods for repair.
3: Although most of us can ride mud, Metcalf Mud is a different breed. The mud (CLAY) here is fun for about 2 minutes. Then it takes over your bike like a bad disease. It will seize your bike where it wont roll any more. View the photos for examples.
We hope this clears up the confusion. We want to stay open but we have to take these 3 factors into consideration first and for most."
