Nasty. I've only driven on and rode on the first few miles of Mines road, I didn't realize it goes alllllll the way down and connects to San Jose via HWY-130. Looks like an awesome ride... how dangerous is the road? The first part from Livermore seems okay.

Why did you guys remain in the road around a blind corner? What if another version of yourself traveling in the opposite came around that corner at the same speed? Two bikes poking out in the road, and riders standing.

I'm glad no one was hurt. Be safe out there.

Both bikes had bent rims and were not movable. We stood them up because fuel was leaking, and there wasn't really an area to put them besides the road. The third biker put his bike around the corner, and we set helmets out as warning signals. Once we got things cleaned up a bit, we moved out of the road to wait for the tow.

Mines/130 is an epic road, but notoriously dangerous. I've ridden & driven the road many times since this accident occurred, though I'll admit that on my bike, I usually keep my speed fairly moderate. There are tons of blind corners, decreasing radius turns, wildlife, and in some areas alot of dirt/gravel. Not to mention there are often other riders and sports cars out.

That being said, the stretch from Livermore up until the centerline disappears is probably my favorite to ride. Hard not to crank on that throttle through there.

Either way, it's a great road and a better ride. Once the weather clears up, grab a few friends and do a full loop, you wont regret it. Make sure to stop at the junction and grab yourself some grub too.

Define "dangerous". In some places it's too narrow for a center line. In some places there will be gravel that matches the color of the road surface. This time of year there will be water on the road in places. There are some blind turns. :dunno

Had no idea Mines was such a killer. It's just a road. :dunno

that corner "the fence curve" (named for the fence on the right, a clue to your entering a dangerous curve) has claimed more bikes than I can remember.

I've almost bailed there couple times myself until I memorized the curve has trashed asphalt on the entrance right at the point of turn in (or maybe just a lil' after.) That whole section going WB has numerous mid/high-speed curves w/trashed entrances.

As having -almost- bailed there several times on that section I either slow or let someone else lead there. Too many times have I had to go get a pickup & truck someone out w/a trashed bike & rash...

If you ride Mines/130/Del Puerto Canyon Roads often, commit these killer sections to memory...:thumbup

My first time was this sunday. Ran out of time and turned around just before the unmarked section ended.

Lots of gravel in places, tight blind turns. Riding my sprotsbile at a relaxed pace, had fun. I'd consider myself a new rider and I didn't have too much trouble other than some other bike coming the opposite direction entering my lane while exiting a blind turn.

I need to leave earlier in the day and do the whole thing to Hamilton soon. And probably take the freeway to Livermore from PHill as it was nearly an hour to get there via Morgan Territory.

Holler at me next time you want to go do Mines. I'm in Bay Point and love both Morgan Territory and Mines.

What about this loop? Only 175 miles, we could do it twice

Looks like an awesome ride...
It is awesome. As others have mentioned, there's a section that is single lane for two way traffic, coming from Livermore I don't remember the mileage but it's few miles in after the turn off and it becomes a single lane and I believe it's the Santa Clara (county) line were it returns to two marked lanes, albeit not much wider. Just remember to give yourself as much of a sight line as possible; late apex, hug the inside on rights, outside on lefts. Locals fly down that road since they know it so well and don't seem to expect traffic.

If you plan on taking that 636, be sure to take it easy the first few times on that road. Gravel is common in the corners. Also, there may still be a water crossing where the road is low and a creek goes by.

Oh yeah, and tip toe by the bull in the road, if he's still around. He's a big mofo...

Have fun! :thumbup

roads aren't dangerous.......

guns don't kill people......

I love those roads. I don't ride mines very often as I start from the Patterson side and am headed to San Jose. So I take del puerto cyn from Patterson toi Junction and turn left at the Junction and go on 130/ San Antonio valley towards the Observatory.

To me it's no more dangerous than any other road. You ride according to conditions and not outride your sight lines. For me it is always more fun on a lighter bike with dirtbike style handlebars though. I have ridden that road with me ninja 650 at different times with the sportbars(lowered and emulates clipons) and stock handlebars(1 pc dirt style). I was much faster with the stock bars for some reason.

Mines is pretty brutal, I know more people that have went down on that road than all the other bay area roads combined.

..still a fun ride though :p

Damn Chris!

I will ride a portion of that route with you, my butt hurts just looking at that route.
