Mines Road...

Dangerous is a perspective.

Road it Saturday with Butch. Loved it.
He waves me pass and I went a bit faster than he. We have our comfort zones. All roads are not built with run off or safety as the main goal.

We hit two water crossings. Saw some gravel. Etc. but it was epic. I love the one lane shit. Love love it. :ride

Do your thing with respect of the unknown and knowing that there are some dangers there and you should be fine. Understanding how a Moto steers and being precise opens these roads up to being really fun. If you tend to "wonder" then roads like Mines and 130 on the San Jose side are more dangerous.

There was several spots on 130 where you had 12" of good turf to use. If you can deal with that then you are golden. If you cannot then practice precision. I mean really practice it by applying it always. Freeways, city streets everywhere. Check out the vids that D posted to get a flavor. :thumbup

Enjoy the :ride

I do Mines road during the week, maybe crack of dawn on a weekend. Its a fine road if you stay frosty. One thing to keep in mind, get stupid and your not getting outta there unless its LifeFlight.

There is a low part to this road? Because the video posted looks like Southern California in the Summer. Not much of a thing, really, unless your car's engine light goes off and then you're fucked and can't go riding at all.

Good thing you have that old Ford rear axle. :p

Most twisty roads are in mountains, ear-go, there are precipitous egresses from the paved highway. I have noticed this in recent years and slowed my advancement when said egresses are to the outside of said mountain road in the direction to which I am transversing said mountain.

Calaveras scares me more as a road to be honest. It's just a ton of blind turns that tighten. Ridden it once, was completely exhausted mentally.

"Danger is as danger does" Forrest Gump

Ride appropriately for the road and conditions, and you'll be fine and have fun. :ride

Geez, Grant rides mines twice a week and Darrell twice a month, those guys are Super Moto Maniacs !!! , I rode with them to the junction one day and they were both wicked fast , gravel everywhere, water crossings and they were gone, I think the dirtier the road the better they liked it !!!! :teeth that was an awesome ride but very humbling :thumbup :afm199, mines is one of my favorites, especially when there's good food waiting for me :afm199

I know many people that have crashed out there, one friend almost died (due to his own actions), another friend (eventually) died due to another vehicle running wide and hitting him head on. The road is much narrower than most other roads and in my experience tends to cause cars and motorcycles to cross the center much more often than other roads.

Mines / Mt Hamilton isn't the place for new riders.

You need more miles under your belt. :laughing :thumbup

Both Mines & Calaveras (and Morgan Territory and and and) are fun as hell. Just ride your own ride, i.e. manage the speeds so that you stay in control all the time and you'll have a blast. Maybe you need to follow somebody (else) and see how they ride those rides. :thumbup You shouldn't consider the roads to be racetracks, either.

good thread. I like to think that I do not outride the road I can see. That is prolly true most the time, but still can't help with folks coming the other way. I always stay to the right of the center and it pisses me off when others do not.

I try to give myself enough room to deal.
And yeah, I consider Mines and San Antonio Valley and Mt Hamilton roads to be a clean line, 12 inches wide. Two of them, usually.

Mines is awesome. My favorite local road (I don't know many!!). Very tricky with gravel, oncoming idiots on wrong side of road, blind bends, off-camber and more. Probably extremely hard work for novices, but pure joy for me!

Now - that LOOP posted above looks very interesting ...

I've ridden Mines with a lot of skilled riders.
The thing that I keep repeatedly seeing with the ones that know it vs the riders that just do it every now and again:

"Seasoned" Mines riders hug the inside of right corners and dance along the far right side of the road on lefts. It doesn't matter what section of the road, oncoming cars hurt, don't cut corners on this road.

Bruce, I have not ridden Mines much since our last ride a few months ago. Changed schools and don't have the time to ride out there as often. I don't care what road it is, if one knows it well, it becomes challenge to keep up and bikes/hp become irrelevant.

I just realized a mod made a new thread out of my comment. Lol cool

Lots of great stories here. Thanks! Maybe someone will ride it with me 😛

Mines is pretty brutal, I know more people that have went down on that road than all the other bay area roads combined.

..still a fun ride though :p

Worse than Palomares Rd, Niles canyon and redwood road? :D

I'll be visiting the area from Omaha and I was suggested this road. Found this thread, read the comments and watched some YouTube clips. Now I can't fucking wait! I'm hoping to hit it up on 16 or 17 April.

Try Palormares Canyon too. Keep speeds down as not to piss off the locals. Many hidden driveways. Other than that, stop and take some pics of the view.

DLIT, shoot me a message when you're in town and I can show you some fun stuff, as well. :thumbup
