More Time To Get Fit - 2025

Many shoe makers finally figured out that people don't have pointed feet. So toe-boxes are getting wider and more square. Brooks is probably more square than most. It's really nice once you get over the looks.

I have Saucony carbon-plated trail runners. The sole is stiff and springy. It feels like cheating when running.

My running shoes last longer than my cycling shoes   . I've had my cycling shoes for 18months and they are done. The last pair only lasted 12months, so I guess this is an improvement. But I'd love a shoe to last over 2yrs. It really sucks to have to find a new shoe model.

Robert is right, shoe companies have started to figure out a better way to shape a shoe. They actually fit the form of the human foot. I currently use Topo shoes for running and everyday wear. I’ve used Brooks, Hoka, and Altra too but Topo works best for me. Yeah some of the newer shoes look funky but they feel/fit and run soooo much better than what you thought you were going to purchase.

I only use my running shoes in the gym and don't use them for daily walking around so the miles on them per week is about maybe 9 or 10 at most because they are expensive to replace.
that's fair. I try to use mine just for walking but I kill them dead in a few months. They're about $150 a pop but I figure it's worth it not to kill my knees and get fit.

I am on my 3rd pair of Altra’s. Old running shoes become work/yard shoes. Chunky toe boxes for the win.

how far before a big run, should you do not do any other runs (or do) so that you're not wiped out?

probably depends on the person but I"m thinking at least three days gap, based on the legs hurting... : |

For me that depends on intensity. If im trying to do a “fast” run I need to be pretty fresh. 2-3 days rest with stretching and light movement activities to stay loose and recover well. If im trying for a long, low intensity “slow” run, I can go on one day rest or maybe even back to back days if it’s been a higher volume, lower intensity week of training. As always, pay attention to how your weak points feel and don’t push through too much of an ache or pain. Clear as mud right? :laughing

are you stretching?
When
Now ?
😆
they're hurting a tiny bit RN

A little bit before a run yeah. But I had to look up "basic exercises" pretty much . I do like two lower-calf stretch (push-the-car), 2 "whole leg/butt-joint" rotations... maybe a lunge... man, is stretching booring

i am going to hurt you physically and emotionally. then i am gonna send you some running specific stretches.

Speaking of running, has anyone been following the Cocodona 250. Dan Green beat the men’s record by more than an hour with a time of 58:47:18. That is a 13-minute/mile average for 256 miles. For the women, Rachel Entrekin absolutely destroyed the women’s record by 10 hours with a time of 63:50:55. She finished 4th overall. She finished yesterday and the 2nd place woman is at mile 255.4 as I write this. One of the guys that I’ve run with a few times is also racing, he’s at mile 177.

The ultra crowd are truly looney :laughing

More power to em. The body is an amazing tool when honed well.

Running tapers are serious business. My ultra friends do a 3wk taper. I’ll have the ask them. But I seriously doubt they avoid running in the 2-3 days before an event. Openers the day before are a thing. Losing small amounts of fitness because you took time off is a thing. Tapers are always a balance btw losing fitness and keeping the legs ready to go.
