I have a set of pipes for my tuono that need a repack. I looked on amazon and there were "2 stroke" and "4 stroke" packing. They all look like fiberglass to me. Some are for dirt bikes, others for harleys. Is there one that will work well for my tuono pipes? They sound like tin cans right now. Too loud and zero tone.

If you want super bitchin stuff, go to a ceramic/pottery store and get ceramic wool. Its cheap and holds up to 2.6k degrees.

I've used Silent Sport Pro before. I repacked a muffler once. Knowing what I do now, I would pay a shop to do it. It's not worth the hassle unless your end cap uses screws instead of rivets.

Muffler packing = euphemism?

Sounds grody...

is it better to pack tight or loose?
tight = less sound/loose = more sound?

just a dbi question.

never worried about sound back in my day. the U,S, of A had not been invaded by soccer moms, or men waring panties that bunch up.

Is it heat that breaks down the packing or the big pulses from the vtwin

Both. Especially big twins. Anecdotal, but every holed our/ruptured exhaust can i've ever seen we're on twins.

What was so hard about re-riviting the ends back on? I've rivited stuff before, pretty standard procedure no?

This. Drill out rivets. Wrap packing arround core and tape. Place core into cylinder and re-rivet. The tape will hold the packing in place during install or it will bunch and move and stick out and catch on every f'n thing arround.

Ceramic wool would also be more fragile than glass. If you get anywhere near the melting tempmof either your bike is probably in some kind of furnace being melted for scrap

Cedric - are these stock cans or aftermarket? I believe I saw a repacking kit somewhere for Akras or Tigraft online.

If they're the stockers, I believe I saw a set of stock cans on CL recently...

They are cored and shortened stockers. I ran them for a day and they sound like garbage. I want to repack them and see if i like the sound. if not ill pass them on to the next guy.

If you want some I have some for sale, I still have this left and you wouldn't have to leave San Pablo to pick it up.

1) Drill through existing rivets.
2) If the end cap doesn't fall off use penetrating lube and a rubber mallet to gently persuade it. The Muzzy I repacked took an hour of gentle persuasion.
3) remove wire core in muffler.
4) remove fiberglass packing
5) install fiberglass packing
6) replace wire core in muffler
7) start itching even though you wore a long sleeve shirt and gloves
8) re-rivet the end cap back-on

Before you start make sure you have multiple drill bits, packing, a rubber mallet, disposable gloves, disposable long sleeve shirt, rivets and riveter.

How much does it use? I looked it up and they said 450g per 4stroke sport bike muffler. What did you use half a bag to wrap? Trying to see if i will have enough.

I did a Muzzy off a '04 Ninja 250R. It was about 16-18" long and I used far too much packing.
