My R1200S blew its engine yesterday

Only one way to find out... I'll ask them at service the next time I call. I'll let ya all know.

Dollars-to-donuts it'll be an issue for them to deal with the paperwork of assigning that engine number to the frame. Probably less of a hassle for them to rebuild the motor and split the labor costs with BMW.

UPDATE...

Bike still down for the count. Still waiting for parts from Germany. :(

Regarding the question of NEW engine versus rebuilt, and the associated costs of each, the answer is a new engine is entirely UNAVAILABLE. Otherwise, the mechanic said, they would have likely taken that route.

On another note, the rebuilt is accompanied by a 2-year parts warranty essentially covering the bike from potential future failures (unless I was at fault some how... ran the bike dry of oil, for example).

so i rode an S1200R today.... and it rocks! absolutely love it, so much easier to ride than my R6. especially for a bigger bike, it actually feels smaller.
although the sound it makes is so german and boring, otherwise awesome bike

Is that warranty transferable? It would be a nice selling point.

I stand corrected on my previous statement. Good to know! :thumbup

Does the new warranty cover the whole bike, or just the engine/work performed?

i have a 1999 323i with 201000+ miles and its still running... :ride

there is always somebody looking for a new motor on one of the BMW forums as E46 cooling system is a joke. Just Google e46 and any one of the following to see what the poster you quoted was refering too.....coolant, head bolts torques, final stage, window regulator, door seal, "mouse fur", lower control arms, thermostat housing, water pump, radiator....etc. There are many places that sell a complete "cooling system package" as a preventive measure, and many websites describing the cooling system problems and what to replace when....

UPDATE: No progress. The bike sits at the dealership in a heap of parts as it has for the last 5 weeks. The dealer tells me that the parts are on back-order in GERMANY! In other words, the parts don't exist in the world, according to BMW NA. The dealer has suggested that I now take it up with BMW NA to at least get an ETA.

It doesn't help that they are willing to contribute to the cost of repair if the bike is not repaired. The original timeline the dealer provided was 8 days!

The dealer is correct-sometimes a screaming customer gets more grease than a squeaky dealer, who just won a battle in your favor.

Second update: Just spoke to the dealer and they DO have the parts as of this morning, so no need for me to go whining to BMW NA. The bike should be back on the road in the next few days. :thumbup

BMW is one of the few manufacturers that still have parts for their older bikes. Not that the R1200S is that old (07 model), they are still available in Europe/Asia I think. But yea, hang in there, they're just so rare stateside, the parts have to come from Europe. They'll get here.

You do have that other new bike to play around for now, right? :)

I do and it's been a lot of fun. I am still deciding whether I will sell the R1200S once it's repaired, but I either want to ride it or sell it, if ya know what I mean. Once it's repaired the first stop is to get new tires front and rear :thumbup

Your bike was out of warranty and they're helping with some of it. I'd say you're lucky they're paying for anything at all.

Well... no matter what happened to the engine, you'll end up with an R1200S and new engine. That's a sweet deal in my opinion. :)

Thanks Plumber... that's hugely enlightening :|

First, you're commenting on something that has been resolved. Two, if you think I am approaching this from a standpoint of entitlement, you haven't read my posts.

Another (hopefully last) update

Scheduled to get the bike back on Saturday. It's taken a long time to get the bike running to the dealer's satisfaction but apparently all's good now. Their making some final tweaks and the bike should be back in my garage this weekend :thumbup
